![]() 'Back To School' Coming Early By Marianne Boerigter Beaches, pools, campfires, fishing …it is hard to think about the school year starting, but Newaygo County public schools will begin classes before Labor Day this year. So get those backpacks ready! Newaygo County Regional Educational Services Agency (NCRESA) applied to the Michigan Department of Education for a waiver to begin... ...the school year prior to Labor Day, which was granted by the state in May 2016 for the 2016-2017 school year. Working with a common school calendar, NCRESA, Big Jackson, Fremont, Grant, Hesperia, Newaygo and White Cloud Public Schools will begin with their first day of classes on August 29.
The waiver was requested from the state by NCRESA to better accommodate the growing early/middle college programs in partnership with post-secondary institutions and to avoid a school calendar that went well into mid-June 2017. Along with Newaygo County school districts, other West Michigan schools were also granted a waiver to begin school early. Holland, Mecosta/Osceola ISD, Montcalm ISD and Rockford students will also be hitting the books before the Labor Day weekend. Need more information on your school district’s calendar?
