Circles Newaygo County is a new initiative aimed at reducing poverty in Newaygo County. They do this by creating networks across social class lines. They’ve come to find that people who are struggling do not often have the wealth of resources and connections that those of the middle class do. By pairing up participants, called Circle Leaders, with middle to upper class volunteers, called Allies, these networks are shared and friendships are formed.

This year National Astronomy Day will be celebrated on Saturday April 29, 2017. The Kropscott Farm Environmental Center/ SF Wessling Observatory, located just 7 miles north of Fremont, has family activities planned for that entire day. The fun will start at 2:00 p.m. and end with participants viewing the stars, planets and deep sky objects until midnight.

Pledge to kick tobacco March 25 can help put Newaygo County on path to better health

On March 25, Newaygo County can play an active role in sending tobacco addiction up in smoke.
That’s when people can take a pledge to quit – or stay off – tobacco. At the Great Start Family Expo at Newaygo Middle School, the partnership that makes up the BreatheWell campaign to reduce tobacco use in Newaygo County will invite individuals to take this pledge, while providing the support and resources soon-to-be ex-smokers need to succeed. The expo is open from 10am to 1pm.

Somewhere in our area, sometime recently a conversation went something like this:
“Well now we’ve got that replaced let’s get rid of the old one.”
‘What are you thinking? Take it out to the road for the trash guy?’
“You know it’s all kind of porcelain and metal and all. I’ll bet it’s recyclable and we can take it down to the site with the other stuff.”
‘You sure they take it?
