Meals To Go From HTRJ
A Word (& Menu) From HTRJ
Last week for Monday, Wednesday Take-Homes
Greetings to All,
This will be our last week, of Monday and Wednesday night Dinners until fall. We will however continue offering a Friday night Dinner through out the Summer season. BBQ RIBS will be coming soon! Attached is the Menu for this weeks service. We will be open on Mother's Day from 8-3pm with no night time service. I will be sending out our special menu for that in a day or two. We will be opening up more days for Breakfast and Lunch in the near future as soon as this crazy weather breaks! Stay tuned and thank you for all your patience and support!!
An Update From Hit The Road Joe
Some good news for area foodies
Chef T.'s Croton eatery has been the scene of many N3 meetings as well as a few celebratory dinners. In addition to this week's menu she is letting her loyal following know of some upcoming changes.
Spring is hopefully finally here!! Which means there are once again some changes coming to Hit the Road Joe. It has been a crazy couple years navigating thru Covid19. We are so thankful that we have such a wonderful and loyal customer base and are certain that is why we are still here!! We could not have made it thru this difficult time without YOU!! We had to change our format from full time Breakfast in-house service to limited Breakfast and weekly Dinner service with more emphasis on drive thru accommodations. But it worked and we were able to stay open! Again, thanks to you!
With better weather ahead of us and less Covid restrictions we are planning on going back to a more Cafe style Restaurant. This means we will be open more days with longer hours. Catering to more Breakfast/Lunch service. Unfortunately this also means we will not be offering Monday, Wednesday, and Sunday night Dinners. At least for the busy summer time. We may offer up Dinners again in the off season. Our last night of Sunday Italian Dinners will be May 1st. Our last Monday and Wednesday night Dinner service will be May 2nd and May 4th. I apologize for any inconvenience this may have for anyone. I am going to miss them too which, is why they may return in the Fall if the demand is there. We will still have a Friday night Dinner and Saturday night Wood-fired Pizza service and will be adding Sunday night Pizza come summer.
We are hoping to have Patio up and running come Mothers Day. We will have a special Breakfast/Lunch menu like in the past for this special day. Stay tuned for more info on that and the extended days and hours of operation.
Hope this hasn't been too much of a confused Rollercoaster ride!! We are trying our best to get back to some sort of "normalcy" whatever that may be nowadays!! Attached is this week's menu.
Thanks again for being loyal and wonderful customers
The Food Truck Foodies Have Spoken: Mata Taco!
N3 Readers opine on portable provisions
In the latest of our highly subjective, unscientific and randomly gathered surveys we asked readers what their favorite meals on wheels offering might be.
Mata Taco drew in a solid 50% of the vote to take the top spot.
We also asked participants why they made their selection.
The Mata family is an amazing family. They mean so much to our community and the food is to die for.
Fresh and nothing like it around here
They have amazing food and the couple who runs it are so sweet and really take the time to interact with their customers.
Cuz it’s DELICIOUS, duh! -and always service with a smile!!
Because Tacos....and the owners are amazing!!!!
It’s amazing. The food and service are both phenomenal.
Hello!! The great food! The prices are great! Oh and the couple are so nice.
Second Place ended in a tie between relative newcomer Hola Arepa and the widely popular Sweet Racks & Smokin Butts.
Sweet Racks & Smokin Butts
110% hands down the best BBQ in Michigan PERIOD.
The loaded Mac, loaded mashed potatoes, and wings hit the spot every time!
Their food is AMAZING and I love that we can buy their meat by the pound!
Best street food I've ever tasted
Desgranado sooo good and so are the arepas
It’s not your normal everyday food but it is amazing! It’s filling, priced right and tastes damn good.
2 Hot Tamales
I love their tamales and they are very nice people!
Great meats, fair prices, friendly staff
Their flavor is unmatched and I love the variety they offer. Their lines are always long but worth the wait.
Best pulled pork
Pizza Cone Trolley
Uniquely delicious cones stuffed with yummy pizza ingredients
The best pulled pork around. Absolutely love the pig Mac daddy bowl
We also asked folks how far they would travel and while many mentioned distances from 10 miles to up to an hour we were most impressed by this one for SR&SB:
“Anywhere in the lower peninsula.”
And from a Mata Taco fan:
“Thousands of miles if that meant getting amazing tacos...Wherever they are, I'll go!”
We will endeavor to let you know the where and when of the local food truck scene as we receive the info from the vendors.
And look for our next survey on your Newaygo County faves.
Food Truck Fan Survey
Food Truck Fan Survey
The proliferation of food trucks has brought a variety of enticing eats to our area. Making appearances throughout the county and beyond, the portable provision providers can be seen popping up at various sites including Farmer’s Markets. lakeside parking lots, special events and sometimes just an open space.
As part of our Nibbler section N3 wants to keep our readers abreast of where and when to find their faves. Each week we will strive to deliver a schedule revealing where they can be found.
We have contacted some we are familiar with and will add others as they touch base with us.
In the meantime we want to hear from you. Answer the questions below to participate in the survey of N3 readers.
We’ll compile the results and add it to our guide to gastronomical freewheeling.

Newaygo Brewing Co.
If you're looking for a fun brewery environment, but don't want to make the trip to Beer City USA, check out Newaygo Brewing Co. One of Newaygo County's newest residents, Newaygo Brewing pumps out delicious and unique brews that rival their equally delicious and unique artisan pizzas. Fear not, non-beer lovers! Their drink menu also includes hard cider and wine as well as root beer that is dangerously good with vanilla ice cream. MJ
The Grant Depot
The Grant Depot is located in the historical train depot that served the area beginning in 1891 and was turned into the popular dining destination it is now in 1979. Stop in for breakfast and fill up on classics like the Train Wreck, a mix of eggs, hash browns and veggies, or a plate of fluffy pancakes. Lunch and dinner options abound as well, with giant homemade sandwiches and daily dinner specials, and don't forget about the deep fried pickles that are to die for! You will find something for the entire family. With a quaint, warm and family-friendly atmosphere decorated with train memorabilia and historical photographs, you can learn about the history of The Grant Depot and get a wonderful home cooked meal. Don't forget to grab a homemade pie or giant cookie on the way out! MW
Shamrock Bar and Grill
Under new ownership and supported by a great kitchen and wait staff is the byword at the Shamrock Pub and Grill located at 1300 E 8th St. White Cloud. Modern new furnishings, large screen TVs and new carpet complete the makeover for this large, bright Michigan style roadhouse. The Shamrock has an attractive, well-stocked back bar, a good selection of beers on tap or by the bottle and new menu of your favorite pub grub. Try the pot of tots for a trip down memory lane. For a special dinner you can choose from a nice selection of interesting entrees or the daily special. A great place to turn off M37 as you are going to and from your up North weekend retreat or to while away those cold winter evenings arguing over your favorite Michigan team or discussing the political plot du jour. The Shamrock has a bandstand and nice size dance floor so check for the next booking. CC
Decorated inside with Newaygo County memorabilia and curios, Koffee Kuppe is a great stop for a caffeine fix, ice cream craving, or casual lunch or dinner in downtown Fremont. A friendly spot with specialty drinks and coffees, soups, salads, wraps, sandwiches and best of all....serving Hudsonville Ice Cream, a West Michigan finely crafted ice cream! MB
Lakes 23 Restaurant and Pub
Located between 2nd and 3rd Lakes (hence the name) at Waters Edge Golf Course in Fremont, Lakes 23 Restaurant and Pub has a full menu for dining, as well as tasty appetizers and drinks for a fun happy hour or get-together with friends. Enjoy a stunning view of the lake and luscious green golf course while dining on steaks, salmon, perch, shrimp tacos, artisan burgers and sandwiches such as my favorite "Walleye Sammie"...a fun dining adventure! MB
An area favorite for their breakfast items being served all day, Moondance Cafe also offers appetizers, soups, salads, stuffed hash browns, paninis, burgers, Mexican cuisine and unique dinner entrees. Outdoor seating is available for those nice weather days! Located on the west side of Fremont. MB
Hit the Road Joe
Try the stuffed French toast. It really is unlike anything else you'll ever eat. There are other things on the menu, of course. For breakfast you could enjoy a sandwich, Eggs Benedict or old fashioned oatmeal to name a few. For lunch you could choose from paninis, Rubens, and wraps, all with fresh garden ingredients. Drinks are just as fun, with Italian sodas, lattes and juices to round out your meal or to be enjoyed alone while you soak in the homemade jewelry and artisan goods that adorn the walls. You can sit for hours enjoying the relaxing views and local feeling. But don’t forget your checkbook or cash as they do not accept credit cards. AM
One of the most popular bar and restaurant combinations in Newaygo County, Northern Trails offers a wide variety of food and beverages. The menu offers everything from burgers to fish and shrimp as well as salads and pasta dishes. Karaoke starts at 9:00 every Friday and Saturday evening, providing entertainment for those who come from far and wide. When a fire destroyed the original building years ago, it was rebuilt to provide plenty of room in the new, larger building, making for quick seating with friendly and efficient wait staff. AM
