When it comes to New Year’s resolutions, quitting smoking tops the list. Turn your resolution into a plan with help from Spectrum Health’s Tobacco and Nicotine Treatment program. Free quit smoking, vaping, or chewing classes, as well as one on one appointments are available. There are a variety of ways to participate: in person, online, or via phone. Not only is nicotine highly addictive, but it also becomes engrained into many daily routines and can have social connections as well. This is often called the triple edged sword of addiction. Classes and appointments are designed to help you consider each of these components and develop a plan to address them. • Biological: We will discuss the 7 FDA approved cessation medications and Nicotine Replacement Therapy to help you decide what might be the right fit for you. • Psychological: We will look at how tobacco and nicotine products fit into your routines and daily life. Do you have a cigarette with your morning coffee? In the car? After a meal? Finding other activities to do instead and changing behaviors is an important part of the quit process. • Social: Being around others who use tobacco products can be especially challenging when you’re trying to quit. We can help you plan for this, too! For more information call 231.924.7589 or email caitlin.mitchell schucker@spectrumhealth.org DHD#10 Looking for Community Partners to Host COVID-19 Vaccine Clinics
January 7, 2022 – District Health Department #10 is looking for community partners that are interested in hosting pop-up COVID-19 vaccine clinics at their businesses, organizations, or community events. “With COVID-19 infections remaining high, it is more important than ever that we continue providing convenient opportunities for residents to get tested and vaccinated,” said DHD#10 Health Officer Kevin Hughes. “Help from our community partners will assist us in making sure everyone has access to vaccinations and testing. When our community partners engage in these efforts, our communities are more likely to partake in getting vaccinated and tested.” All vaccine clinics will have the Johnson & Johnson, Pfizer, and Modern vaccines as well as boosters for those eligible. The Pfizer booster shot has been authorized and made available for those 16 and older. Hosting usually lasts one day, for a specified duration. For those interested in hosting a COVID-19 vaccine or testing clinic at their location, please complete this registration form: https://bit.ly/3j52rSj For those needing a COVID-19 test, DHD#10 is hosting testing clinics at various locations throughout the jurisdiction. N3 Note- What we have been posting here each week are facts. Facts and numbers supplied by our Health Department, the public organization tasked with informing, educating and empowering communities about health issues, and the hospitals who are charged with delivering necessary medical care, often for acute and complex conditions. While the folks who are skeptical may cite anecdotal conversations with a medical person they encountered who supposedly knows the “real” story or perhaps might subscribe to the misinformation readily available on social media, we trust the viability of our health care institutions as well as the integrity of those who share the information. We trust them because they remain the experts in what has been a constantly evolving base of knowledge about an unprecedented and catastrophic health crisis. While altering strategies are the appropriate measures taken when new research and information comes to light, the changes have led to suspicion among a populace where suspicion of nearly everything has seemed to become an art form. This suspicion is not likely to change in any current scenario but neither will our trust in these bastions of health care. That being said, here are the latest stats from Mr. Powell. Our jurisdiction’s daily cases per million increased, but the percent positivity has decreased since last update. There was an increase in cases (+62.5%) when comparing the most recent 7 days (12/29-1/4) to the 7 days previous (12/22 - 12/28). There was an increase in deaths (+66.7%) when comparing deaths that occurred in the most recent 7 days to the 7 days previous. As of today, all of our counties remain in the high transmission level categories. The first Omicron variant in our jurisdiction was identified in Newaygo County, and there are currently 839 confirmed Delta variants in our jurisdiction. As of yesterday, there were 9 COVID-19 inpatients in Munson Cadillac, 7 in Munson Grayling, 4 in Munson Manistee, 15 at Spectrum Health Big Rapids, 11 at Spectrum Health Gerber Memorial, and 11 at Spectrum Health Ludington. Attached are graphics from the Munson and Spectrum System websites highlighting vaccination status of hospitalized patients both as of 1/4/22. January 4, 2022 – District Health Department #10 (DHD#10) reports their first case of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 in a resident residing in Newaygo County. According to the CDC, the Omicron variant is concerning because it will likely spread more easily. How easily Omicron spreads, compared to the Delta variant, remains unknown. The CDC expects that anyone with the Omicron infection can spread the virus to others, even if they are vaccinated or do not have symptoms. Current vaccines are expected to protect against severe illness, hospitalizations, and deaths due to infection with the Omicron variant. Breakthrough infections in people who are fully vaccinated, however, are likely to occur. “While one case may seem low, the possibility for this variant to spread quickly is much higher,” says Kevin Hughes, Health Officer of DHD#10. “Unfortunately, at home test kits cannot tell us whether or not an individual has the Omicron variant, so we need to remain vigilant in testing, vaccination, and following recommended guidelines.” For those wanting to schedule your COVID-19 vaccine, booster dose and/or flu shot, please visit www.dhd10.org/schedule or call 888-217-3904. If no appointments are available, consider going to a pharmacy or your primary health care provider.
