White Cloud Boys Begin Season with Positive Results Photos and story by Joan Ludke and Tod Reeve The White Cloud Boys’ Track and Field team came off of Spring Break with their first conference meet of the season and, despite the time off, started the season off successfully. On Tuesday, April 11, the boys traveled to Newaygo for a four team conference meet with the host team, Grant, and Big Rapids. The boys defeated Newaygo 101-36 and bested Grant 115-21, but fell to Big Rapids 74-63. “We were a bit rusty, but we had some pretty good performances overall,” commented Head Coach Tod Reeve. “I think that there are still many holes that we need to fill, but I think that, given time, we will be able to compete well with all of the bigger teams in the CSAA. Being the smallest team in the 11-team conference is difficult, but our theme this year is ‘fight the good fight’, and we are working very hard to fill our holes and achieve success.” The field events helped White Cloud be successful. The Indians won 4 out of the five field events, and finished 2nd in the fifth. In the shot put, junior Lloyd Sebright-Johnson and senior Jace Silverthorn went 1-2, with Lloyd throwing a personal best of 46 feet, 8 ½ inches. Jace and Lloyd switched positions in the discus. Jace finished first with a throw of 128 feet, 10 inches, while Lloyd threw 116 feet, 1 inch. Junior Noah Robinson jumped a personal best of 6 feet, 3 inches to win the high jump, while senior Nate Ciolk jumped a personal best of 12 feet to win the pole vault. In his first track and field In his first track and field meet ever, sophomore Reece Johnson long jumped 18 feet, 8 inches to finish 2nd overall. On the track, the Indians finished 2nd in 7 of the 12 events. Senior Bryce Higman was runner-up in both the 110 and 300 hurdles, setting a personal best in the latter. Junior Jace Silverthorn backed up his efforts in the field events with 2nd place showings in both the 200 meter dash and as part of the 4x200 meter relay with teammates Dalton Crawford, Vinnie Ockert, and Dominick Burkhart. Junior Carson Foondle finished 2nd in the 1600 run and teamed up with Coleson Cruzan, Josh Brown, and Nathan Ciolk to finish 2nd in the 4x800 run. Nathan rounded out the 2nd place scoring for White Cloud in the 400 dash. The Indians will return to Newaygo Friday, April 14 for the eight-team Newaygo Invitational. White Cloud Boys 2nd at Newaygo Invitational The White Cloud Boys Track and Field team returned to Newaygo Friday night, April 14, to participate in the Newaygo Invitational against seven other schools. The boys ended the night bringing home a plaque by finishing 2nd overall with 104 points. Reed City won the meet, scoring 157 points. Senior Jace Silverthorn led the Indians on the night. Jace finished first in both the discus and shot put, setting a personal best in the shot put. He also finished 5th in the 200 dash and teamed with Vinnie Ockert, Noah Robinson, and David Higgs to end up 4th in the 4x200 relay. Vinnie also finished 3rd in the 100 dash and 6th in the 200 dash, and ended up 3rd in the 4x100 relay with teammates Dalton Crawford, Reece Johnson, and Dominick Burkhart, Senior Nathan Ciolk added to his victory in the pole vault with a 3rd place finish in the 400 dash. He also combined with Carson Foondle, Coleson Cruzan, and Josh Brown to finish 2nd in the 4x800 relay. He also teamed up with Josh Brown, Giuliano Venditti, and David Higgs with a 3rd place finish in the 4x400 relay. Coleson Cruzan also added to the scoring for White Cloud by finishing 3rd in the 800 run and 4th in the 1600 run, while sophomore Kaleb Canning lowered his best time in the 3200 run by 35 seconds to finish 4th overall. The Indians will take part in a four-team CSAA contest Monday, April 17 in Big Rapids, before traveling to Fremont Friday night to take part in the eight-team Packer Relays. White Cloud girls’ track team finished 3rd at the Newaygo Invitational on Friday with 94 points. Kent City with 118 and Newaygo with 97 placed first and second among the 8 teams.
White Cloud placed first in 5 events. Mariah Edwards and Gaby Reeve lead the team with two first places each. Mariah finished first in the 100 meters (13.91) and the 200 meters (29.14) while Gaby won both the discus (112’2”) and the shot put (30’3”). Annie Feldpausch earned another 10 points for the team, winning the high jump (4’10”). Congratulations to all of the teams and competitors on their fine performances.
