![]() By Ken De Laat While our local Boys teams kickoff...I mean tipoff... their season this week, https://www.nearnorthnow.com/sports1/basketball-preview-and-now-for-the-boys) the Girls have a game or two under their collective belts. While still very early in the season, these teams are beginning to learn how they match up against the competition that is high school hoops. Here’s a short peek at Monday and Tuesday Girls games MCE at White Cloud Monday 7pm The Cards beat Walkerville in their first game. White Cloud ran into a Tiger team that was hitting on all cylinders last week. Coach Wilk’s team needs to shake off that beating, stay out of foul trouble, and find their shooting touch. Shelby at Fremont Tuesday 7pm The Tigers shook off a second half meltdown against Newaygo to trounce conference foe North Muskegon. They are a young team with talent and actually held a lead over the Lions at intermission. The Packers struggled against Spring Lake and will be tested by their visitors from the Lakeshore.. Newaygo dominated the inside game.If the Packers can do that and find some consistent offense this should be a good game and a prelude to next season when Fremont heads to the WMC. Whitehall at Newaygo Tuesday 7pm Their second WMC game in a row pits the Lions against the Vikings. Whitehall lost to Allendale and clipped Ravenna in their first 2 games. Newaygo started slow against Shelby but came alive in the second half behind strong performances by Goodin inside, Long outside, and Fisk all over the court. Kent City at Grant Tuesday 5:30pm Well, here we go. After blasting White Cloud the Tigers stumbled against a speedy Cedar squad. And here comes one of the fastest teams around. The Eagles lost a lot in Harrison and Bayle but the Geers' girls can both light it up as can Bowers and others. Their first 2 wins were over D1 power Muskegon and Gold contender Big Rapids. The hosts have a lot of weapons and will need to go into the bench to keep pace here. The scoring won’t come as easy as it did against the Cloud. This is likely the best team they will face until mid January and they will need to keep it close in the first half to have a shot but this one should give the Tigers a good perspective on where they’re at. Holton at Tri County Tuesday 7pm The Vikes took apart Lakeview in their opener but the Wildcats, while likely improved a bit from last years cellar dwelling team, still have a ways to go Holton trounced Lee, another team not expected to make much noise this season. TC plays a physical game, they are always tough on their home court and Coach Alger will have her team ready for the Devils. This is going to be an interesting Red Devil squad. They have some offensive weaponry and their young players who struggled with consistency last year, improved a lot by season’s end and should pay off dividends this year. A tough game early but things don’t get any easier for the RD's with Morley coming to town Friday.
