Back from the break. Most of the boys teams return to action Tuesday with a very short schedule of games (game, actually) on the girls side.
Girls Newaygo (5-1) at WMC (2-1) 7pm The Warriors opened with a loss to a strong and long Hart team and rebounded with wins over Lakes 8 rivals Ludington and Muskegon Heights. Kyla Wiersma is a scoring machine while Libby Mast has accounted for some key buckets in the 2 wins. The Lions are finding their groove as a team and can dominate a game when all cylinders are hitting. Long has been a sniper from distance, Goodin is playing the paint like an artist and Fisk continues to employ the kind of dogged defense that has frustrated opponents. Painter and Swinehart have settled into their starting roles well and Coach Thomasma has bench players ready to step up if the team is hit with their one vulnerability, early foul trouble. WMC has a strong following including N3 friend and reader Wayne Mast who travels from Fremont to see his granddaughter Libby play. The Warriors will likely need all the support they can muster to have a shot at the visitors from Newaygo. Boys Newaygo (2-2) at White Cloud (2-2) 7pm The Lions have not made it easy for Coach Jason Long with seemingly every game being decided in the final minute or so. This is an interesting team. Decker is a titan inside and Long an outside threat but the team has a number of players who can rise to the occasion and push the team forward. The Cloud got stomped by Reed City but the Coyotes are likely challengers for the Gold title and have started by reeling off 4 wins, all but one by 30 or more points. Newaygo is going to put up points so the hosts will have to score a bunch to have a good shot at winning and those points aren’t going to come easy. Fremont (2-3) at Ludington (2-4) 7pm Don’t pay a lot of attention to the Orioles record. The combined team W-L record of those 4 losses is 16-2. And their home gym has never been a welcome sight for Packer teams. Jordan McDonald has been a huge part of the Fremont offense despite drawing a whole lot of attention from the defenses he’s faced. Should be a good test for the Pack heading back into conference competition where they will need a few more players to put points on the board. Sparta (2-1) at Grant (2-2) 7pm The Spartans will look to make it a trifecta of wins over our local Gold teams after edging Newaygo and defeating Fremont. But this is Grant and the game is on the Tiger home court. Schuitema can be dominant and overall this is a team that can come at you from a lot of directions. Likely a close game and the Spartans will grind to the buzzer but the hosts can be explosive and if the shooters find an early touch… Holton (2-0) at Wyoming Lee (1-2) 7pm The Red Devils put on a pair of defensive clinics in their first 2 games. The last time they took to the court for a game, however was about 3 ½ weeks ago. They will be on the road and need to shake off their lengthy sabbatical, stifle the Legends early and heat up Fowler, Monette, etc. as they prepare to continue their defense of the Silver title.
