It's Tourney time again with the girls taking center stage this week with district play in Fremont for Division 2 and Kent City for Division 3.
Here's our take on the games. D2 Fremont District- First game begins at 6pm Comstock Park (14-6) vs.Tri County (11-9) Park stumbled a bit at the start of the season losing 3 of their first 4. While they played a dominant Kent City tough in their opener they inexplicably lost to a mediocre Wyoming team and after a win over an overmatched Holland and another loss to Hopkins they settled in and have only lost 3 times since. Twice to a terrific West Catholic squad and once to Allendale a team that came on strong in the second half. Against teams with a winning record the Panthers are just 1-5 The Vikings have a winning record. Tri County has not played the level of competition CP has and while their second half surge has been impressive, particularly the road win over Montague and the home wins against the Lions and the Hornets, they are going to have to play really well to have a shot here. Containing Panther McKenna Bent would be a good start since she can absolutely light it up if she gets going early. Newaygo (13-7) vs, Fremont (15-5) Twice this season the Lions had a 4th quarter shot at beating the Packers but they could not finish. The defense of Miller and Shriver took the Long sisters out of the game last time and some key Newaygo attempts down the stretch didn’t fall and so the Lions did. They’re playing in Fremont, always a tough venue for opponents but these teams have gone at each other with little regard as to where they’re playing and might just as well be competing on a playground court somewhere once they take the floor. Two of my favorite local teams to watch for the sheer tenacity they both exude from tipoff to final buzzer. This one is a toss up but if it comes down to the final minute keep your eye on Shriver. Since her earlier varsity years she has had a way of being in the right place at the right time with the ball in her hands. And she has rarely disappointed D3 Kent City District- First game begins at 5:30pm Morley Stanwood (17-3) vs. Holton (5-15) Sorry Red Devil fans this one is all but in the books. A rebuilding program with 5 wins, 4 of them over teams with a combined record of 3-67and an overtime win in their opener where they scored 28 points. With overtime. The Devs averaged 13 points a game in their two conference matchups with the Mohawks while Morley averaged 60. Te ‘Hawks want another shot at Kent City but they have to get past this one and White Cloud to get that shot. The MS starters should be well rested for the WC game on Wednesday. Ravenna (10-10) vs. Kent City (19-1) The Bulldogs have won their share of games but they haven't played anyone with the firepower of the Eagles. In mid season they nipped league champion Montague after slipping past a good Shelby team but they haven’t beaten anyone with a winning record since and Kent City doesn't do much of anything else besides win. Oh, and the game is in Kent City. West Michigan Christian District- Game at 7pm. Fennville (6-14) vs, WMC (14-6) The Blackhawks have won just once in the past 6 weeks a one point squeaker over the only team below them in the SWAC Lakeshore standings. The Warriors have put together a strong season though they have struggled against teams with a winning record (2-5) Fennville doesn't have a winning record. Ken DeLaat- N3 Sports
