With just a 2 week window from the start of practice and the season both teams showed a little rust, but the second half saw Grant settling into their game and playing the Pirates even. “We finally got some baskets to fall in the second half and kept the game from being a blow out," added Delamater. Alexa Obenauf dropped an even dozen points to lead the Tigers with Payton Bouwkamp hitting for 7 and Lily Gee adding 6. Grant will open their conference season by hosting Tri County on Friday. Ravenna 34 White Cloud 18 Coach Wilk: “On a night where we were so excited to be back on the court Ravenna outmuscled us for a win. We led 6 to 5 after the first quarter, but they dropped 17 points in the 2nd quarter to outpace us the rest of the way. We really struggled inside against their height. Of their 34 points all but 2 came from the paint or the free throw line. Our rebounding was not where it needed to be tonight and it is something we are going to work on all season. The good news is this team will continue to get better as the season goes on. Andi Vincent led us with 9 points. We will travel to Shelby on Thursday. Montague 61 Newaygo 49 The Lions opened on the road against a tough Wildcat squad, falling behind before making a couple of late runs. Foul trouble put the Lions in an early disadvantage and the team struggled to find a rhythm most of the night. With the Cats holding an 11 point lead heading into the 4th, the visitors whittled the lead down to 2 but could not stay close as the hosts ran away late in the final frame. Coach Thomasma: “Fouls killed us in the first half and throughout the game and we struggled with girls playing positions they weren't used to, which really played into Montague's press. Give credit to Montague though. They made big shots and also consistently made their FT's. Rough opener for us but it was a good learning experience for our team. I loved the way we competed. There is no quit in this team, we just have to play smarter and we must take care of the ball better if we want to reach our goals this year." Ruby Hughes led the Lions with 12 points and 9 rebounds, Naomi Schillman hit for 9 points all on 3 pointers and Amaya Lathrop finished with 8 points and 4 steals. Morgan Andres added 7 points and 5 steals. Newaygo travels to Sparta on Wednesday. Muskegon Catholic Central 51, Hesperia 12 Kaley Cousineau led Hesperia with five points, while Alyssa Wishman added four points and Olivia Gerard had three points. Hesperia hosts Pentwater on Dec. 10.
