Russo, Davis earn All Stater honors
Grant had two state medalists at the MHSAA individual State Finals held at Ford Field Friday February 28th and Saturday March 1st. Senior Alex Russo started out extremely strong winning 12-5 in the opening round over his Clare opponent, following that up with an overtime victory over the #2 ranked Chris Campbell from Algonac. In a rematch from districts, Russo held a lead in the third period in the 3rd period before being caught and pinned in the semifinals. Alex lost a close match in the placement rounds, before finishing his high school career with a win in the 5th place match at 126lbs. Alex finishes his career as a 3 time state qualifier, all state as a senior and 157 career wins. Junior Kashton Atwood lost a competitive opening round to Tegan Ray from Kingsford, before rebounding and defeating Caden Kittendorf from Williamston 12-0. In the Blood Round Kashton lost by one point, almost securing a last second takedown against his Frankenmuth opponent. Sophomore Markie Davis made more Grant history becoming the first Girl's Division All State wrestler since the MHSAA instituted the division. Markie started strong with a 6-3 win over Shrum from North Farmington before losing the number one seed Manuel from Romeo. Davis held a lead the entire match against Ludwig from Midland in the Blood round, winning 6-5 to secure All State. On Saturday she came back and pinned Bayle Buvia from Carlson in the first placement match before falling to Rhianna Venegas in the second placement match. Markie lost to Senior Ava Pelton from Montague in the 5th place match
