Photos and Story by Michael Paige Packer harriers turned in some great performances at the 2nd WMC Lakes meet of the 2024 season, held at Ludington’s West Shore CC course. The boys started the day out scoring 39 points for the win. Senior Carter Sherman ran a 17:18, good for 2nd place overall behind Whitehall’s Stewart Waters. According to Fremont Coach Cliff Somers, “Senior Cole Lowery (17:32) and Junior Chase Lowery (18:01) turned in outstanding races for the team today finishing third and eighth overall.” Chase Lowery’s time was his best so far this season on a course that typically adds 45-60 seconds due to the hilly terrain. Isaac Romero (18:25) and Blake Taylor (18:39) finished 12th and 14th respectively to round out the top 5 for Fremont. Sophomore Mossen Green had a strong race, finishing 18th and running 34 seconds faster than he did at the same course 17 days prior. Sophomore Andy Krapp had a big PR of 19:45 on the tough course, running 24 seconds faster than the Sept. 14th Ludington Invite. Brandon Rasmussen (25th – 20:06), Max Taylor (34th – 20:39), Jacob Christoffersen (38th – 21:08) and Ethan Campbell (55th – 24:45) also ran for the Pack. The girls also had a fantastic race. Somers said, “I saw a lot of girls improve their ability to run the downhills with speed. Juniors Linnea Paige and Joelle Patten both had break out races running almost as fast as they did on the flat and fast course at the Cougar Falcon invitational a couple Saturdays ago and I was really impressed with senior Riley Chase, running aggressively on the down hills.” Paige led the charge with a second-place finish at 20:07.50. She was about 10 meters behind winner Annabelle Lowman of Ludington with 100 meters to go and closed the gap over that span to 5/100 of a second for the photo finish. Patten finished second for the Packers with an 8th place finish at 22:32. Kira Manchip finished 11th at 23:02 followed by Fremont runners, Rachel Maddox (17th – 24:06) and Ava Krohn (20 th – 24:16). The five scored 58 points, good for second behind Ludington with 26. Krohn continues her fast improvements this season, her first on the team. Her time was a 2:20 improvement over her time on the same course just 17 days ago. Junior Rocquel Richards ran a season best time of 25:11 followed by Jailyn Saum (25:38), Riley Chase (25:56 PR), Jessie Kendziorski (27:48 – 1 minute faster than the previous race at this course), Alayna Bukala (28:01 – 4 minute improvement from previous race at this course), Madison Dunbar (30:01 – 2 minute improvement on this course), Margarita Romero (32:33 in her first race of the season) and Anne Kausch who ran a 38:01 in her first race, beating her goal of 45 minutes and earning her stripes. Per Coach, “It was a great team effort all the way around.” Fremont will compete at the huge Portage Invite on Saturday Oct. 5, a meet that is always a good preview of competition they will encounter at the regional and state finals meets. The Division 2 varsity (top 7) boys run at 12:30 and girls at 1:30. JV races are boys at 2:30 and girls at 3:30. See race website for more information. https://www.portageinvite.com/
