Girls Districts begin at Fremont, Tri County and Mason County Central (Scottville)
Fremont District Monday Ludington vs. Reed City 7pm Wednesday Big Rapids vs. Ludington/Reed City winner 5:30pm Fremont vs. Newaygo 7pm Friday Finals 7pm Wow, talk about a loaded District. Fremont repeated as WMC Lakes champs going undefeated in conference play, Big Rapids swept through their CSAA-Red schedule undefeated to take that title. 2nd place Ludington lost only 2 conference games, both to Fremont. 2nd place Newaygo lost only 2 conference games, both to Big Rapids. Reed City placed 3rd in the Red. 5 of the top 6 teams in the Lakes and the Red are playing in this one. But let’s start with Monday's game. Ludington’s losses have been to teams with cumulative records of 65-10. This includes D1 powerhouse Grand Haven, undefeated D2 #4 in the state Negaunee, and D1 Cadillac who came in 2nd in the Big North conference. Don’t be deceived by Reed City’s record. They have been a solid team since the calendar flipped and come in winners of 4 of their last 5. They put a scare in BR losing by just 3, and were the only conference team to get that close to the Cards. The teams played in the season opener when the O’s narrowly nipped the Coyotes in a 25-21 game that must have featured a whole lot of missed shots and turnovers but hey, it’s been 3 months and 20 games since then. I’d give the Orioles the edge because they’ve only lost twice in 2025, but no surprise if the ‘Yotes offense gets cooking early. Interesting side note:. In the Feb. 3rd MHSAA power ranking used to seed teams in the tournament Fremont made their first appearance at #15. That week they beat 2 teams including a pretty solid Shelby team and fell to #16 on Feb. 10. They continued to win and as a reward fell to #17 on Feb. 17. Then they won handily twice more and dropped out of the rankings while Big Rapids inched in at #25. Tri County District Monday No games schedule Wednesday Grant vs. Comstock Park 5:30pm Tri County vs. Sparta 7 pm Friday Finals 7pm While the Fremont District is loaded no one in this one has a winning record. Comstock Park has won 4 times, Tri County 5 Grant 10 and Sparta? They are 0-22. The closest they have come to winning was, interestingly enough, a one point loss to the host Vikings this past Tuesday and a 7 point loss to the Tigers in January. We’ll preview the Tri District games on Tuesday. D3 Mason County Central District Monday MCC vs. Hesperia 5:30pm White Cloud vs Manistee 7pm WednesdayManistee/ White Cloud winner vs. Hart 7pm MCC/Hesperia winner vs.Shelby 5:30pm Friday Finals 7pm The Pirates and Tigers are the top two seeds for a reason. State ranked Hart has lost just one game all season. To Fremont in Mid December by a single point. Shelby has fallen 4 times, twice in close games with longtime rival Hart, once to Fremont and once to Newaygo. Manistee started the season winning 4 out of 5 and have won just 3 times since. White Cloud has also struggled on the court with their best win a mid January battle with Central Montcalm. Both teams have had a hard time generating a consistent offense and both have a key player when it comes to scoring, Edmundson for the Mariners and Vincent for the Cloud. Coach Wilk has a young team for the most part who are still developing their game. Look for the aforementioned players to get a lot of defensive attention in this one. Both teams played Holton in December. Manistee won by 1, WC lost by 16. The winner gets to play a Pirate team with an eye toward sweeping their neighbor. We haven’t seen the Panthers play but their girls have shown up and taken to the court despite a long season without a win. While they are not likely to upset a Spartan team that bested them twice by a total of 80 points they get some kudos for grit. There will be a season when the Panthers will be on the winning side of District play. Just not this one.
