Boys Holton 54 Newaygo 41 The Red Devils made it three in a row by shaking loose from a 1 point halftime deficit and taking charge in the second half to secure the road win. Coach Swanson: “I thought we played a good game tonight. I thought Newaygo also played a good game. (Bryce) Decker gave us quite a few problems but I felt our guys never blinked, they trusted themselves through adversity, and that's always what you want to see as a coach.” Red Devil Wyatt Monette Led all scorers with 23 points while pulling down 7 boards while Kevin Erickson hit for 15 points and tallied 4 steals and Carter Brant dished out 5 assists. Decker led the Lions in scoring with 17 points also grabbing a dozen rebounds Fremont 64 Orchard View 51 Coach Bowen: “This was a good win against a very dangerous team. They have multiple guys that can light it up from three point range, and Williams is a great player! We executed our game plan well in the first quarter, then got a little sloppy in the second. We played much better in the second half and we were able to get the ball in the paint and limit our turnovers. We were missing a couple of guys from our rotation due to injury, but we had kids step up and play really well in their absence. “Jordon McDonald had another big game for us with 28 points and 8 rebounds. Sophomore Gavin Richards had his best game of the season finishing with a double-double, 16 points and 18 rebounds. Carl Vliem was huge off the bench with 12 points and 4 rebounds.” Grant 66 Morley Stanwood 47 The visiting Tigers outscored Morley in each quarter to win a non-league contest. Seth Schuitema led the team in scoring with 25 followed by Lucas Swanson with 11 and Sawyer Carr with 10. Gage Cronk added 8. Coach Schuitema:”The guys competed from the tip to the end of the game. All 10 guys contributed and scored." Girls Newaygo 43 Reed City 21 Jaxi Long led the Lions with 22 points (five three pointers) and 6 steals. Emmerson Goodin had 9 points and 9 rebounds. Kayla Fisk chipped in 5 points, 5 steals and 3 assists. Newaygo led 11-6 after the 1st quarter and outscored Reed City 12-0 in the second quarter to go up 23-6 at the half. Newaygo was up 32-10 after the third quarter. Coach Thomasma: "Good win up at Reed City tonight for the team. Reed City plays good defense and really makes you grind it out on every offensive possession. I thought Jaxi really shot the ball well in the first half and helped spark us a little bit. Happy with the way the girls are committing on the defensive end too. We have a tough game coming up Friday against a good Big Rapids team at their place." Montague 54 Grant 39 Montague’s size and athleticism provided a tough matchup with the Tigers but they were able to hang close to the WMC contender until the fourth when the hosts went on a run to ice the non-con game. Arends led the Tigers with 10 points. Holton 45 Lakeview 31 “Coming off an overtime win the night before and with this being a 4 pm road game in Lakeview I was concerned about how we would show up today. We haven't gotten out too many good starts this year and today was no different. We were down 4-8 after 1, tied at the half 18-18. We have been a second half team all year for the most part , and we were able to pick it up defensively, create a few turnovers. Courtney Boes had a great game defensively and rebounding with 12 boards , her energy has been amazing these past 2 games. Abby Fowler paced us with 9 points, 5 boards and 5 assists. Ryann Robins had 8 pts 9 boards. Scoring was very well balanced as no one had double digits. “Happy to get a league win and 2 wins in 2 days , but we need to start stringing together complete games down the stretch. We are going to need our best effort for a highly anticipated rematch with white Cloud on Friday, I know that is one that both teams want.” Whitehall 56 Fremont 54 (OT) Monday Boys Mason County Eastern 76 Hesperia 33 The Cardinals who have been red hot of late took control early to secure the win over the visiting Panthers Ethan O’Neal and Ian Fox each finished with 8 points for Hesperia Holton 61 Calvary Christian 37 Coach Swanson: “The guys came out and played a really good game tonight. I was very pleased with our defensive intensity. Offensively the ball didn't stick and I think that contributed to how well we shot the ball.” Wyatt Monette led the scoring parade with 19 points to go with 7 boards, 4 assists and 4 steals. Bret Hosmer hit for 13 points and pilfered 6 steals Austin Fowler dropped in 11 and Carter Brant dished out 9 dimes and contributed 7 points. Austin Fowler, Holton 11 pts Carter Brant, Holton 7 pts 9 ast White Cloud 54 Walkerville 43 Coach Jones: “Not one of our most inspired performances tonight, but we were able to grind out a victory.” Taylor Bode had a game high 18 points, Jared Watson hit for 15, Donavan Stevens finished with 7 while Kevin Strait and Christian Ringler each knocked down 6. Girls Mason County Central 34 White Cloud 20 Coach Wilk: “Tonight we faced a very solid MCC team and held our own. This game was very close for most of the night. Going into the 4th quarter we were down 19 to 15. MCC made a few key shots in the 4th, and we missed too many free throws. I'm happy with how we fought tonight, but if we cleaned up a few things we might have taken a win home with us.” Carsyn Scarlavai and Gaby Reeve each finished with 5 points. Holton 48 North Muskegon 43 Coach Jordan: “We really needed this winning coming off of last week. Credit to North Muskegon they came in ready to play and made it hard on us all night.Their length really gave us problems when it came to rebounding tonight.....outside of Robins we have zero height. They really killed us on the O glass for the first 3 quarters. If I had to guess I'd say they had at least 20 second chance points. We went into the 4th down 11, my message between quarters was "as much pressure as you can put on them" “When the 4th started, we were able to jump out on a quick 6-0 run within a minute or so of the quarter, which was huge. We cut it to 1 with about 10 seconds left, had to foul and their player hit both free throws which put us down by 3. There was a time out in between free throws and we talked about the plan if she hit 1 or both, she hit both and my point guard Abby Fowler executed it about as good as you can, we rolled the ball for as far as we could she drove hard to the top of the key drew defense and kicked it to Layla Cannady who hit a huge 3 for us to take it into overtime. Once we got into overtime, we were able to ride that momentum and pull out a 5-point victory. We ended on a 26-10 run. “It was a great learning experience, especially for my 4 10th graders, they were all on the floor for most of the 4th and the entire OT, as that was the line up that created the momentum. We just have to make sure we stay focused. We cannot afford to look past anyone.” Ryann Robins dropped in a dozen and peeled 14 off the glass while Abby Fowler scored 9 and dished 7 with 7 steals. Courtney Boes grabbed 8 steals to go with her 8 points.
