Cloud Goes 2-0, Panthers Fall To MCC

It wasn’t a work of art by any means but it was a win and a conference win at that.
Closing in on the halfway mark of the first quarter Barbara Toth got the Lions on the board with a basket and after three more layup shots she had her team up 8-0. Desiree Brown ended the Warrior scoring drought with a couple minutes to go in the first but Addison Goodin split a pait=r at the line and Toth scored again to give the hosts an 11-2 lead after one.
Newaygo’s offense hit a cold spell in the second quarter and Brown began hitting some shots for CH including a triple as the half wound down and it was 13-11 Lions at the break.
It was the closest the visitors would get as Maria Riddering split at the stripe Goodin hit a bucket and Toth scored 3 more times before Brown tallied for the Warriors. Goodin answered then Grace Painter nailed one from distance and the Lions hit the final frame up 27-13.
Chip Hills wasn’t done yet however. Brown and Karley Densmore tried to shoot their team back in with a 9-2 run but by then it was too little too late and Newaygo put a W in the book.
Barbara Toth led the Lions with 18 points, 6 steals and 5 rebounds.  Addison Goodin chipped in 9 points and 3 rebounds.
Coach Thomasma: "Proud of the girls tonight.  They hung tough on an off shooting night and were able to get the victory.  We know we have to continue to get better and continue to work hard in practice.  We got a good week of practice coming up to get ready for a tough Central Montcalm team."
Newaygo (1-0, 1-1) will return to action on the road next Friday when they visit Central Montcalm.

The Cloud made it 2 in a row to start the season with a non conference win over the Tigers.
Coach Wilk: “Tonight was all about battling through adversity from the start. We knew heading in that we were going to be missing one of our senior leaders for tonight’s game, so we needed to have the next player up mentality. Brooke Ringler joined the starting lineup tonight, and she showed some aggressiveness when attacking the hoop. The first half did not go as well as we had planned, so during halftime we made a few adjustments. Once we settled down and started playing White Cloud basketball things started to come together, and our players earned win number two of the season. 
“For the second game in a row our scoring was distributed very well with almost everyone getting on the board. As always Jaden Gomez led our team defensively, and she handled the ball with poise all while having an honorable mention all state player applying the pressure. She finished the night with 6 points. Gaby Reeve led our team with 10 points, and each one of them was earned by being strong in the paint. Late in the game Tanayah Klammer came off the bench and hit two big threes to put the game out of reach. She ended the night with 7 points. We will be working on a few things at practice before we take a trip to Mason County Eastern on Monday.”
​White Cloud (0-0, 2-0) will begin conference play next Friday as they welcome in the Vikings of Tri County.

Muskegon Catholic 42 Hesperia 25
The Panthers kept it close in the first half hitting the locker room down just 5, but the Crusaders pulled away after the break and secured the non conference win.
Mia Milner led visiting Hesperia with 10 points while Samy Logana hit for 9.
​Hesperia (0-0, 1-2) will head to Lakeview next Tuesday to take on the Wildcats before opening their conference season at home Thursday in a matchup with North Muskegon.
