Team places second in weekend tourney Story and Photos by Jaime Harkness The Newaygo Lions Varsity Baseball team snatched the lead late in the game in a 9-1 victory over Hopkins on Saturday at the Kenowa Hills Baseball tournament. The game was tied at one with Newaygo Lions Varsity batting in the top of the fifth when Josiah Long singled on a 3-1 count, scoring one run. In the first inning, Newaygo Lions Varsity got their offense started. Glenn Toth doubled on a 1-2 count, scoring one run. Hopkins knotted the game up at one in the bottom of the first inning, when an error scored one run for Hopkins. Seth McGowen earned the victory on the pitcher's mound for the Lions. The righthander surrendered one run on two hits over four innings, striking out five and walking one. Long threw three innings in relief out of the bullpen.
Newaygo tallied 15 hits on the day. Glenn Toth, Russell Toth, Parker Christensen, Seth McGowen, Grant Harkness and Remy Wells each had multiple hits for the Lions. Toth went 3-for-3 at the plate to lead the Lions. The Lions advanced to the championship game facing off against Kenowa Hills. The Newaygo Lions fell behind early and couldn’t come back in a 12-4 loss and took 2nd place in the tournament. The Lions (8-3) will visit Fremont Tuesday to face the Packers in a doubleheader. First pitch scheduled to be tossed at 4:15pm.
