Story by Ken De Laat Photos by Bobbie Cruzan and Ken De Laat Newaygo 40 White Cloud 17 The Lions were coming off three tightly contested games in a row with an overtime win at Whitehall sandwiched between a pair of close losses to Reed City and Lakeview. The Cloud was still searching for a little more offense and hoping to snap a three game skid. Gracy Holmes put up the first points with a shot that would give the Cloud their only lead of the night, 2-0. Naomi Shillman got the hosts going with a bucket then Maria Riddering stole the ball and found Shillman who again put it in the hoop. Amaya Lathrop who was a demon on defense all night, took a theft of her own downcourt and made it a quick 6-2 lead for the Lions. Brooke Ringler converted a pair of free throws but the Lions answered with a score then Riddering scorched an off-balance shot at the buzzer for 3 and the quarter ended with Newaygo up 12-4. The Ringler points were the last the Cloud would tally until the second half when her basket made the score 18-6. Jaden Gomez canned a triple but Shillman answered with one of her own and the Lions kept their visitors at bay the rest of the night for the win. Coach Thomasma: “"A lot of positives out of the game tonight. We really played with some intensity on defense and challenged White Cloud on a lot of shots. We had 3 pretty tight and intense games this week and the girls responded well. It's Snowcoming week on top of it but they stayed focused and played with confidence. Really proud of them!" Coach Wilk: “. We had some good stretches in the 3rd and the 4th, but we weren't able to battle back.5. We get a long week off to prepare for state ranked Morley Stanwood. Fixing some of our miscues will be the goal next week. Lathrop led a balanced Lion scoring attack with 10 points to go with her 5 steals and 3 assists. Lilly Holmes and Shillman each knocked down 8 while Addison Goodin took down 8 boards to go with her 7 points. Holmes paced the Cloud with 6 points and Gomez, who seemed to be all over the court on defense added 5. Newaygo (6-7, 2-5) will welcome in Holton on Tuesday while White Cloud (6-10, 2-5) will be visited by Morleystan on Friday.
