Story and photos by Tara Hefferan The Lions were on the prowl tonight, outscoring the Hart Pirates 8-0. The visitors started the game strong, with an early goal off the powerful left foot of Laura Haavisto. Grace Painter netted three more soon after, giving the Lions a commanding 4-0 lead within the first twenty minutes. This advantage permitted field time for more novice players, who were enthusiastically cheered on by the Lions bench. Before the half was over, Laura Haavisto would score another, and Jaxi Long would also get on the board. The second half started with the Lions ahead of the Pirates, 6-0. The Lions practiced stretching the attack, moving the ball forward with width and depth. With twenty minutes left, Grace Painter fired her fourth goal. Flustered, the Pirates handled the ball in the box shortly after, giving way to a penalty kick. Jaxi Long capitalized, completing the 8-0 mercy end to the game. Belen Torres and Lynnea Briones each collected an assist for the Lions. Coach Painter: "Our girls came out ready to play! They put up 6 goals in the first half and several of them had the opportunity to play in new or different positions. Sofia Briggs anchored the back line once again making stop after stop and then distributing the ball forward. While our passing wasn't always pretty tonight, the girls kept after it with good hustle, which paid off with quick counter attacks. Several girls who don't always get a chance to contribute on the field were able to make a positive impact on the game. We are looking forward to another conference game against Grant on Wednesday!" The Lions (5-1, 2-0) return to conference action Wednesday when they host the Grant Tigers. Match begins at 4:30pm.
