Lion Girls Steal One While Boys Top Cloud, O’s Stop Pack, Devils Dominate
Girls Newaygo 61 WMC 54 The Warriors were looking to notch a win at home and entered the final frame up 44-33. But this is a Lion team that simply refuses to lose. Jaxi Long poured in 22 4th quarter points including a flurry of triples in the final minutes to come away with the hard fought win. Stopping Kyla Wiersma proved to be a challenge as she paced the hosts dropping in 33 points. But Long caught fire in the 4th. Down 6 with a minute and a half to play Newaygo’s full court press gave Long the opportunities to rip the nets for 3 straight from beyond the arc with 2 coming off steals by Kayla Fisk and Lily Swinehart and flipped the game to the Lions Jaxi Long led the Lions with 29 points5 steals and 4 rebounds. Emmerson Goodin had 17 points, 5 rebounds and 5 steals for Newaygo. Wiersma led WMC with 33 points. "Really proud of the girls' effort and attitude tonight. We didn't play our best game but the girls continued to believe and battle. Western Michigan Christian had a great game plan and they really dictated play for most of the night with Wiersema really playing well. We got a couple of steals late and Jaxi hit some big time shots to give us the lead which we were able to hold on to. We had some kids step up and give us some minutes off the bench which was huge too." Boys Newaygo 54 White Cloud 38 The Cloud hung around for most of the game but could not catch the visiting Lions in this non conference matchup of rivals from back in the NCAA days. The visitors finally shook off their hosts in the final period to capture the win. Coach Long “White Cloud played tough. Our bench played a big role in the win tonight.” Coach Jones: “We played Newaygo pretty tight tonight. I was proud of the effort and hustle from our team. We just ran out of steam.. Coach Long has a well coached and talented team. We just missed too many open shots.” Three Lions made it into double figures led by Bryce Decker who notched 17 points while pulling an even dozen off the glass. Josiah Long fired in 11,Jason Osawabine hit for 10 and Grant Harkness collected 10 boards. Jared Watson paced the Indians with 14 points, while Christian Ringler, Kevin Strait and Jason Reuther each scored a half dozen and Taylor Bode added 5. Ludington 77 Fremont 51 The Orioles took a 39-30 lead at intermission then pulled away from the Packers in the second half. Coach Bowen: “Ludington was the best team we’ve played this year by far. We battled hard and were competitive in the first half but they dominated the third quarter and the deficit was too much to overcome.” Jordon McDonald led the visitors with 18 points. Holton 60 Lee 29 The Red Devils showed no sign of rust after a lengthy layoff as they took command early on the road building a 26-14 lead at the half then running away from the Legends after intermission. Coach Swanson: “The team was so excited to play a game after a three and half week break. I thought it really showed with our energy all 32 mins. And although it's impossible to play a perfect game that didn't stop Wyatt Monette from trying tonight on both ends of the court.” Monette put together a monster game finishing with 31 points, 15 boards, 7 blocks and 5 steals.Kevin Erickson had 11 points and pilfered 3 steals and Carter Brant gift for 7 points and dished out 4 assists.
