It was a rocky week for N3 World Headquarters with internet and power both taking an untimely and far too long sabbatical from the premises. Still the games continued. Monday Newaygo and Fremont tangled in the Montague District opener with the Packers coming out on top 46-29. Coach Zerlaut -- "We expected Newaygo to be ready to play. They jumped out early on us, but we were able to play through some opening quarter nerves and gain our footing a little. The third quarter was big for us to gain some momentum and confidence as we opened up the lead a bit. However, Newaygo didn't go away and battled until the end." Coach Thomasma: “Kind of the story of the year for us. We played well at times but just didn’t sustain it throughout the whole game. Too many second half turnovers did us in tonight. Fremont deserves credit. They played well tonight.” In the Lakeview District Holton came back from an early deficit against the Wildcats to capture the win 46-39 and move on to a Wednesday battle with Kent City Coach Jordan: We were lucky enough to get out of there with a win to be honest We found ourselves in unfamiliar territory as Abbie Fowler, our PG (And the one girl that never comes out in almost any game) tweaked her back in the first minute of the game and was done for the half. Lakeview jumped out to a 11-2 lead I think as we were all out of sorts and trying to find our footing.. we eventually did a little and got it back to 11-11 after 1… we went into half down 19-23. Second half we grounded it out and we’re able to slowly take and keep the lead through the end but Lakeview was always there. Their coach has done a great job of getting them to compete. They are young and scrappy. Layla Cannady hit 4 free throws to ice it for us. Ryann Robins came up big especially in the second half and Aubrey Goyings energy all night was a real difference for us tonight.. she kept a ton of plays alive with her activity. Several girls stepped up and gave us good minutes…really happy with the way we found a way thru the adversity we faced tonight We need to regroup and get ready for Kent City as we know what that brings, hopefully Abbie Fowler can get some treatment and be ready to go.. we need her more than ever for that game. Wednesday Fremont's season ended with a 34-22 loss against Montague in the second round of District play at Montague on Wednesday night. The Wildcats used full court pressure defense to jump out to a 14-5 lead after the first quarter. The Packers settled in and used solid defense to hold a 7-4 advantage in the second quarter, but trailed 18-12 at the half. Montague outscored the Packers 11-4 in the third for a 29-16 lead at the end of the quarter. Fremont held a 6-5 advantage in the fourth to set the final score. The Packers finished with 27 turnovers in the game. Emma Peterson led Montague with 15 points, while 7 other players combined for the remaining points scored despite nobody having more than 4. Fremont only had four players tally points, led by Olivia Hansen and Jessica Bennett with 7 each and Lily VandenBerg with 6. The Packers finished the season with a 9-15 record. Montague stands at 16-7, and moves on to play Whitehall in the District 40 Finals on Friday at Montague. Coach Zerlaut -- "Montague's pressure defense was the difference in the game. Our girls played with great energy and effort, but we struggled to maintain control of the ball. Even when we effectively broke the press, our shots just looked rushed. They did a good job of speeding us up and taking us out of our comfort zone." White Cloud opened their post season play facing a steamrolling Spartan squad that ended the Cloud’s season with a 54-29 win. Coach Wilk: We started off strong in the 1st quarter, and we were tied up at 8-8 to start the 2nd. In the 2nd MCC was able to get their bigs involved, and they took the lead going into halftime 24-14. They came out swinging in the 3rd as well, scoring another 18 points, and we found the basket for 11. Going into the 4th we were down 42-25. With not being able to practice Monday or Tuesday I felt like our girls did pretty well tonight. We have struggled against height all year, and we did well against their bigs in the 1st quarter. We also took away their outside shooters for most of the night. Unfortunately, they found their bigs later on in the game, and their mid range game was on tonight. Earlier in the season this team beat us up pretty good, so I was happy to see our improvement since then. Kiara Edwards ended her career with a good night of shooting. She led us with 11 points. Gaby Reeve added 10 points as well. Grant fell short by a point in a low scoring game against the Vikings of Whitehall. After falling behind early behind a tendency toward turnovers the Tigers battled back but the Vikes prevailed 33-32. The Grant offense was held under 40 points for just the 4th time this season. Holton saw their season come to an end at 12-12 with a loss to state ranked Kent City. The Devs stayed with a point after one but a 17-4 Eagle advantage in the second put Holton in a deep hole and they could not recover. District play continues with some long time rivals vying for a trip to Regionals. Montague faces Whitehall in the Montague District While Kent City and Morley Stanwood go at it in Lakeview and Hart takes on Mason County Central on the Pirate home court. It will be the third meeting for each of these pairings with Morley, MCC and Whitehall hoping the third time's the charm as each have lost their previous 2 games to their opponents.
