It might be a 2 team race for the Gold title after the Cards avenged their only loss of the season with a win over the Pack but the Lions are lurking a couple games back with matchups against the co-leaders coming up. BR and Fremont each have games remaining against an always tough Hornet squad so things could get interesting as the regular season winds down. The Silver will likely be decided next Friday when MS and KC square off. The Eagles hols a one game lead over the ‘Hawks. Newaygo 57 Central Montcalm 52 The surging Lions took a 30-23 lead into the locker room then held off a 4th quarter Hornet run to capture their 6th win in a row. Jaxi Long had a huge night for the visitors finishing with 16 points, 11 rebounds and 6 assists. Jaylee Long canned 13 points while dishing out 6 assists while Emmeron Goodin also dropped 13 points to go with her team leading 7 rebounds. Coach Thomasma: "Good win for the team tonight. We challenged them in practice this week and they responded well. It's a good road win against a well-coached and solid Central Montcalm team." The win puts the Lions all alone in 3rd place 2 games behind Fremont and Big Rapids the conference co-leaders. A tough trio of home games await Newaygo (6-3, 10-4) beginning with a visit from Morley Stanwood (13-1) on Tuesday, followed by back to back games against the two teams sharing the league lead. Central Montcalm (5-4, 9-6) visits Fremont next Friday. Big Rapids 40 Fremont 35 In a rematch of the classic battle that took place just before Christmas the Cardinals pulled out the win to climb into a tie with the Pack for first place in the Gold. Fremont edged to a 9-6 lead after one and pushed the lead to 17-12 by intermission but the Cards came out firing in the second half with a trio of triples finding their way home in the third to knot the contest at 24 entering the final frame. BR hit another pair from distance and though the Packers had a shot at it with a minute to play as they had possession while down 37-35, they could not get the tying shot to fall. Forced to foul the Cardinals they sent to the line converted and BR secured the victory. The Packers were led by Paige Vandenberg's 8 points and 12 rebounds, while Calla Miller and Chloe Shriver each added 7 points. Megan Mackall led the Cardinals with 13 points, and Rylie Haist added 10. Fremont (8-1, 10-5) will travel to Stanton next Friday to face the Hornets while BR (8-1, 14-1) will visit Newaygo. White Cloud 54 Hesperia 30 Coach Brown: “White Cloud’s torrid shooting and lockdown defense proved to be too much for the Panthers. Alexis Straight got hot early and often netting 37 points including 11 three pointers breaking Hannah Brown’s record of 10. It was a special night and the team knew it, feeding the hot hand of Alexis. Olivia Bowman stuffed the stat sheets with 7 points, 9 rebounds and 8 assists. Emily Hodges took care of the boards with 8 rebounds. What a night to be proud of as the sugar was shared in a record breaking night.” Coach Grodus: “ We started slowly in the first quarter and never recovered.White Cloud played good defense.” Emily Bayle led the Panthers with 12 points and Becci Castillo hit for 10. Emmi Tinkham snared a team high 11 rebounds for the visitors. White Cloud (4-3, 9-6) will travel to Reed City on Monday while Hesperia (3-4, 6-8) will host Lakeview on Thursday. Morley Stanwood 60 Holton 12 The ‘Hawks took home their 5th win in a row as they swept past the Red Devils MS (6-1, 13-1) will hit the road again on Tuesday when they face the red hot Lions of Newaygo while Holton (0-7, 2-12) will look to snap their 8 game losing streak when they host Libertas Christian on Monday. Grant 46 Reed City 36 The Tigers ended a 6 game skid with a win over the Coyotes.Grant (4-5, 4-11) will host Chip Hills next Friday
