Girls Basketball Roundup
Holton 51 White Cloud 34 White Cloud battled to a one point halftime lead but the second half belonged to the Devils who secured their third straight win. Coach Jordan: “Another big win for us and another game we're we took control in the 2nd half. We made some adjustments at half and we really executed them well. We were able to take the ball out of their Point Guard’s hands for the most part and that proved to be the difference. This is one we really wanted and really happy with the effort we played with. This is 3 wins for the week and we want to take this momentum into next week where we have 3 more very winnable games, but we will have to show up like we did tonight. “This game was a little emotional for me with being the JV coach here the last 6 years. Coaching against your former team and girls you truly care about is a weird thing to do, I'm just glad to get through it with a victory.” Abby Fowler tallied 9 points 8 assists and 5 steals. June Newell led the scoring parade with 13 points and Ryan Robin notched an even dozen points and rebounds. Gaby Reeve led the Cloud with 14 points and Abby Derks notched 11. Grant 79 Chippewa Hills 51 The Tigers overwhelmed their hosts with a strong showing of offensive firepower led by Jaycee Rider who canned 17 points. Coach Delamater: “The girls did a great job of getting to the hoop and finding open teammates. Chip Hills did a nice job against our pressure and scored more points against us then I would have liked.” The win, combined with a loss by Big Rapids puts Grant all alone in second place, 2 games behind league leading Newaygo. Sara Arends fired in 14 points while Chloee Chase and Julie Ashbaugh each hit for 13. Lakeview 39 Hesperia 27 The Panthers took an early lead and continued to keep the Wildcats at bay until the final period. That’s when the visitors came alive, outshooting their hosts 18-4 to steal the road win. Emma Joppich led the Panthers in points with 11 and Emmet Tinkham scored 10 to go with her 14 boards. Central Montcalm 69 Fremont 55 Fremont traveled to Stanton Friday night to face the Central Montcalm Hornets. The Hornets were on fire shooting the basketball, ending up shooting 54% for the game from the field (22-41). This included going 8-17 from beyond the three-point arc. Despite this hot shooting, the Packers were right in the game through the first two quarters. The Hornets led 17-14 after one quarter and 30-27 at the half. However, Fremont struggled shooting the ball in the third quarter, and Maia Sexton scored 10 points in the quarter to help the Hornets to a 21-4 advantage and make the score after three quarters 51-31. The Packers didn't go away, trimming the deficit to 10 in the fourth quarter with some effective full court defense. However, they could get no closer and had to begin fouling to try and regain possession of the ball. Haley Zerlaut led Fremont with 21 points and 6 assists. Mia Witte had 16 points. Sexton finished with 22 points for the Hornets and Emily Putnam had 20. Coach Zerlaut -- "Credit to Central Montcalm. They shot the ball extremely well tonight. We thought our advantage would be our pressure defense and picking up the pace of the game, but we were a step slow tonight and weren't able to dictate the pace of the game until the fourth quarter, and the deficit proved to be too much for us to overcome. We need to be able to win games that we score 55 points in, but we were just not good enough defensively tonight."
