GIRLS Newaygo 2-3,1-1 The CSAA Gold Division has 3 undefeated teams. The Lions play 2 of them as they restart the season at home against 8-0 Central Montcalm Friday then welcome in the 7-0 Cardinals of Big Rapids on Tuesday. These games present a couple of tough tests for Coach Thomasma’s youthful team but the fab freshmen Jaylee Long and Lily Ruehmeier seem oblivious to pressure already and the team has several solid and experienced players providing leadership. The Lions may not sting the Hornets with their first loss Friday but it certainly won’t be for not trying. These girls are gamers. Fremont 4-2, 1-1 The Packers flip flop those matchups facing down the Cards on Friday followed by the Hornets buzzing into town on Tuesday. The Pack is still a fcew games away from getting a roster infusion when the Noordyke sisters can take the court and with Bre Harris on the sidelines they will need help off the bench as they face these two likely contenders for the title. Grant 1-5, 0-2 The Tigers are struggling. After squeaking out a season opener win at White Cloud they have fallen short in 5 straight games. It won’t get any easier with Reed City on Friday. The undefeated Coyotes bring their slam-the-door defense against a Grant team averaging under 30 a game in those 5 losses. Tri County 2-5, 0-2 TC spent the break competing against a couple of tough Indiana squads. They return to conference [lay to face a 2-4, 0-2 Warriors of Chip Hills before facing the ‘Yotes on Tuesday also at home. They need to avoid falling behind early as they seem to be always needing to fight their way back into games in the early part of the season White Cloud 3-4, 1-1. The last 3 losses for the Cloud involved teams with a combined 20-2 record. Playing at Hesperia Friday and hosting the MCE Cardinals Tuesday should allow Hannah Brown and company to unleash more of their offensive firepower as neither team possess the defensive ability to shut down the Indians. BOYS Fremont 2-1, 1-1 The Packers have had time to lick their wounds after a pair of painful losses featuring a torrent of turnovers and early foul trouble for key players. Friday they will see if practice pays off when they host the 3-0 defending champs. Big Rapids plays a wild wide open game and Fremont has to contain the Cardinal free wheeling style to come away with a win. This is not last years powerhouse team with the departure of Demetri Martin and others but they can still run you out of the gym if given the opportunity so keeping the score close early is vital for the Packers tor succeed in keeping pace in the conference race. Tuesday they visit Central Montcalm who handed Morley their only loss of while yielding to Grant the only Tiger win of the young season. Newaygo 3-1, 1-1 How good are the Lions? After dropping a close one to a strong Reed City team in their opener they’ve won three in a row but none of those victories were against teams looking to be title contenders. The next 3 games should tell a lot about this team. They begin with their first game on their home court in a month facing the Hornets of CM Friday then go north to Cardinal country Tuesday before heading a bit west to battle the Pack next week Friday. A lot to like about this team who toss a lot of offensive options at opponents including the sharpshooting of Mitch Karrip while Connor Swinehart takes charge in the paint. Grant 1-1, 1-4 Don’t be deceived by their record the Tigers are a good team. They’ve been in it to the end against a trio of undefeated teams and a rugged Sparta squad thus far and now they face another team without a loss when they host Reed City Friday. Coach McCorkle will need to have then firing on all cylinders to take down the ‘Yotes, a team with plenty of varsity experience. They need to start strong and contain Karsten Koopman inside to grab a much needed win.Tuesday they travel to Remus and while the Warriors can’t be taken lightly they haven’t the firepower Grant possesses. Tri County 0-4, 0-2 The Vikes need a win and Friday they host Chip Hills whose only victory came against a Farwell team yet to score 40 while yielding 60 a game. The Warriors present a better opportunity to get victory number one than they will get Tuesday when TC plays at Reed City. The Vikings came into the season without a lot of varsity experience and Coach Delamater’s squad will get better as the season progresses. A win would help immensely. White Cloud 0-2, 0-5 The Indians have lost their first 5 by an average margin of 27 points a game. The Panthers are 0-4 and losing by16 a game. White Cloud has played a tougher schedule but are playing in Panther country. Someone will still be searching for win number one after this one. The Indians follow this up with a trip to Walkerville Tuesday to face the surprisingly successful Warriors who are 4-3 on the season.
