Baseball Cedar Springs 10- 4 Fremont 0-5 The Red Hawks jumped out early scoring a pair in the 1st and 4 more in the 2nd as the Packer bats were silent. CS plated anther 4 in the 4th to end the contest early. The 15 hits from the Hawks were aided by a trio of costly errors for Fremont. The nightcap saw the Packers rebound for a tough 5-4 win. Austin Kukal, Carter Moon, and Cole Miller each had a pair of hits and 4 Packer hurlers combined to hold back the Red Hawks. Soccer Grant 3 Newaygo 0 The Lions and Tigers held a rematch just a week after Grant came away with a 5-1 win. When Grant opened with pssession the Lions showed a new look according to Grant Coach Daisy Gomez de Leon. “Their strategy was to ‘park the bus’ putting all players in the middle to play defense in an attempt to slow our Lady Tigers down.” “We start with a slow tempo, passing to push forward around the opponent’s defensive line up and had several attempts at goal. Forward Nikki Tellkamp had 4 clear shots at goal that unfortunately landed in their keeps hands. With our defense (Sydney Higgins/Haleigh Moyer, Gracie Bearup, Carli Fryling, and Avery Geisen) pushing up it was only a matter of time before we would score. In a quick, one-two pass play Makayla Cronk cashed in and scored our first goal. This was Makayla’s first goal as a varsity player. "Shortly after Makayla scored, Delaney Cronk gained possession on the right side of the field where she dominates, dribbled past 3 players and took a shot that landed the ball in Newaygo’s net.” The first half ended with Grant holding a 2-0 lead. In the second half Kim Settlemyre, who was responsible for multiple controlled steals on defense ended the scoring as she pounded one in from the 18 box. Tennis Grant 7 Big Rapids 1 #1 Singles ace Olivia Keelean went up against Eden Short the Cardinal junior who reached the state finals last year after an undefeated regular season. In a lengthy hard fought battle Short edged Keelean 7-5, 7-5 to put a point on the board for the cards. It was their only point. The tenth ranked Tigers mowed through the rest of the opposition. Kathryn Stong and Sydney Patin battled into overtime for the win at #1 dubs while Jill Arends and Brooklyn Presler shutout their opponents at #2. Liberty Pleune and Kaitlin Pascoe posted a win at #3 and Cecilia Ovalle and Elvira Cruz outdueled their opponents at #4. Track & Field Golden Triangle Invitational-Saline MI Coach Somers: 6 athletes travelled to Saline to compete against some of the best competition in the state. We started the morning with the girls 4x800. Unfortunately the team of Kendra Fowler (Sr), Katie Nicholas (Sr), Leah Converse (So), and Hannah Hamilton (Sr) did not get the performance we will looking for, running 10:18.51 to place 9th. The girls did not let that set the tone for their day as they went on to have fantastic performances in their individual events. Katie ran a season record 1:05.41 season record to place 9th in the morning section of the 400 dash. The rest of our athletes qualified for the evening session of competition. Leah got things started off with a bang running a PR 12:17.36 to place 9th in the Gold section of the 3200 run. Conor Somers (Fr) ran in the Gold section of the boys 3200 to record a 13 second PR of 10:02.55 just missing his goal of breaking 10 minutes. He placed 16th. Kendra was up next in the elite 800 run. She executed her plan for the first three 200s of the race to record a PR of 2:21.42 to place 4th and medal. She is closing in on the school record of 2:19 held by Pam Woodring. Hannah and Nathan Walker (So) ran in the featured event of the meet, the Mike Smith Elite 3200. This race brings in the top 2 milers from all over Michigan to compete. The girls ran first. Hannah did a great job staying focused on her pace early and was able to pick girls off later in the race as she began to move up. She finished in 12th with a time of 11:17.34. She is also closing in on the school record of 11:11 set by JoAnne Lanciaux. The boys Elite race featured a huge pack of 15-20 athletes bunched together, clicking off 68-69 second laps for the first mile. Nathan did a great job staying focused as he got bounced around a little. Rubbing is racing. At the mile the leaders picked up the pace a little and things started to string out a little. Nathan did a good job hanging on but lost a little ground on laps 6 and 7. He finished strong on lap 8 to finish in 9th with a time of 9:10.61 crushing the school record of 9:19 set by Riley Klingel. It was great to see the athletes take advantage of competing against high level competition instead of being intimidated. We will have a busy week this coming week with the Conference Championships in Newaygo on Monday, a Conference make up meet at Reed City on Wednesday, and the Scottie Invite in Alma on Saturday.
