Team finishes second in Holton Invite Photos by Cassie Rickert At the Holton invitational held on Saturday, White Cloud went toe to toe with Division 1 Reeths-Puffer in the championship game. In the first inning, after one out, Mason Ruether lined a sharp single up the middle and scored on an error, for the Indians to take a 1-0 lead. Puffer put up a 3 spot in their half of the 1st inning, putting the Indians down 3-1 after one. Reeths-Puffer added 4 more runs in their half of the 2nd inning aided by a costly White Cloud error. White Cloud mounted a comeback in the 3rd inning with a leadoff single by Dominick Burkhart, followed by a walk to Mason Cruzan, and a shot to the fence for a triple by Mason Ruether to drive in 2 runs. Landyn McGowen then singled in Ruether. Christian Ringler smashed a line drive single to left field and promptly stole 2nd base, putting runners at 2nd and 3rd with only 1 out. The Indian threat was thwarted by 2 straight strikeouts. RP now had a slim lead of 7-4. With good pitching and defense taking over on both sides the game ended after 6 innings with the Rockets taking the win 7-4 and capturing the title. The Indians were led in hitting by Mason Ruether with single, triple, 2 runs scored and 2 RBI's, and Landyn McGowen added a run scoring single. Jayson Ruether was tough on the mound for White Cloud, going 4 innings, giving up 5 hits, 3 walks and 1 strikeout, while allowing 3 earned runs. Nolan Wawczyk pitched the 5th inning allowing no hits and no runs. White Cloud captured the win in Game #1 of the tournament by beating host Holton 11-1.

Story and photos by Tara Hefferan In their first home game of the season, the Newaygo Lions won 6-0 against the Greenville Yellow Jackets. The Lions started off strong, with Grace Painter netting two goals within the first eleven minutes. The first was assisted by McCaiden Rienstra and the second by Connelly Hefferan Nordlund. The Lions tallied their third goal ten minutes later, when Rienstra brought the ball in front of net, forcing a Yellow Jacket error that resulted in an own goal. The Lions were up 3-0 at halftime. The Yellow Jackets returned from the break energized. Despite putting some pressure on Newaygo’s defense, the Jackets were not able to break open the game. Center backs Sofia Briggs and Maddie Couch are finding their rhythm with outside backs Natalie Richardson, Landry Hefferan Nordlund, and Rachel Larsen, and together the backline was able to stop most plays from advancing. In the end, Newaygo goalkeeper Barbara Toth faced 9 shots from Greenville, with 5 of them on target. Newaygo fired in 15 shots, with 6 finding the back of the Jackets’ net. The second half goals were scored by Grace Painter, McCaiden, Rienstra, and Connelly Hefferan Nordlund. Rienstra and Hefferan Nordlund also each had an assist in the second half. The game was well attended, with both home and visitor fan sections energized. The fans saw the full team in action, as everyone on the roster got playing time. There were a number of dramatic moments, as well, with injuries, free kicks, and a near goal by midfielder Lynnea Briones in the final seconds of the game. Reflecting on the match, Coach Matt Painter said, “It was nice to be back on our home field tonight in front of our fans. We are still early in the season and the girls are learning to grow into new roles and positions. For me there were a few highlights from the game last night. Obviously, goals and assists always stand out, but for me, the times where we maintained our formation shape resulting in several passes strung together was the best part of the night! We plan to continue to build on this success throughout this next week. We were also banged up a bit as a team tonight and may be relying on girls to fill unfamiliar roles for a couple games. I know our girls will rise to the challenge! We have an extended stretch of home games, which will be great for all of us!”
The Newaygo Lions are back at home on Monday, April 17 at 4:30 vs. Muskegon. Their record now stands at 2 wins, 0 losses, and 1 tie. White Cloud traveled to Tri-County High School to take on the Vikings. The offense was led by Mason Ruether with 3 hits, including 2 doubles. Jayden Robinson also collected 3 singles, along with Mason Cruzan and Landyn McGowen chipping in with 2 hits each. The Indians added another run in the 2nd inning with an RBI single by Alex Cruzan.
Tri-County added a single run in the 1st inning and added 3 more in the 3rd inning as White Cloud led 5-4 at the end of 3 innings. In the 4th inning, Mason Cruzan led off with a long double, Alex Cruzan reached base on an error, then Landyn McGowen drove a sharp line drive double into the left field corner, scoring 2 more runs for a White Cloud 7-4 lead. The Vikings put pressure on White Cloud in their half of the 4th inning by getting runners on 1st and 2nd base when Mason Ruether got the final out of the game to pick up a Save. Landyn McGowen started on the hill, throwing 3 2/3 innings, striking out 9, walking 6, allowing 4 hits, and 4 earned runs to pick up the win. In a physical match, the Lions and Cats not only battled against one other but also against the wind, as gusts neared 30 mph. The Lions are known for their passing game, but tonight “passing was difficult. The wind would catch the ball and take it in the wrong direction” said freshman Rachel Larsen. As a result, “we had to pass more strategically, focusing on which way the wind was blowing” said freshman Kallyn Moore. With the wind advantage, senior McCaiden Rienstra broke open the game early on, slotting the ball past Cats keeper Tory Hiler. Senior Grace Painter added two more goals, putting the Lions ahead 3-0 at halftime. Switching sides after the half, the Lions played a possession focused game as part of their strategic approach. Sophomore Aaliyah Hernandez said, “Eventually, we got the hang of it.” As a result, Grace Painter was able to bury one more in the second half, with the assist going to goalkeeper Barbara Toth. Lynnea Briones and Painter also had an assist each. The Cats were unable to answer, ending the match scoreless. Reflecting on the game, Coach Matt Painter said, “Each competition teaches us a little bit more about our strengths and weaknesses as a team. Playing Lakeview tonight allowed us some of these teaching moments. We learned some things that we do well, and we learned some things we need to continue to improve on! Lakeview was a physical team that challenged hard on the ball. Our girls learned that when they move the ball quickly, good things happen!” The Lions play their first home game of the season at Newaygo Middle School on Friday, April 14. “Everyone should show up to Friday’s game!” said Belen Torres. The Lions love their fans. “Their reaction to us affects our play. So, when our fans are very supportive, it provides an energizer” said sophomore Maddi Couch. Kick off will be at 4:30 against Greenville. Coach Painter said, “We face Greenville on Friday on our home field. We hope to show our fans the way soccer is meant to be played with great passing and lots of scoring opportunities!” The Lions record now stands at 1 win, 1 tie, and 0 losses. Coach Somers: "We had a solid showing at our first meet. We are a young team this year, and I felt that the guy competed well. We had a lot of PRs from our returning runners also. Whitehall handled us, but we competed well with Montague. The boys were down 2 points to Montague going into the 4x400 (last event), and knew that would decide who would win. With 2 new runners, Owen Hertel (Jr) and Chase Lowery (Fr), Johnny Christensen (Jr) and Bjorn Johnson (Jr), ran a great race and won in a nail biter."
