N3 Note: A few years back there was a bit of a celebration in downtown Newaygo this time of year. Some of the local businesses put on a little gathering known as the Blessing of the Poles. No it was not a tribute to the immigrants from Poland who flocked to the U.S. during the late 1800’s in search of a better life and became part of the ethnic quilt that is America. Pulaski Days in GR provides plenty of opportunities to honor Polish heritage. The purpose of this particular fete was to bestow a lucky season on anglers who fish the rivers and lakes that dot our area (as well as providing an excuse for a bit of partying). If I recall ta couple of clergy performed this rite of spring at Brooks Park to those who gathered, poles in hand. Later on Sportsman’s hosted an evening of events including a minnow eating contest that seemed to be the high point of the celebration. Nostalgia aside we are indeed coming up on the opening of the trout season and our friends from the DNR are here to provide the skinny on Angler’s ‘Opening Day’. Put your 2022 fishing license to good use next weekend during the trout opener and the Lower Peninsula inland walleye and northern pike seasons, all of which open Saturday, April 30. Enjoy Michigan’s world-class fishing opportunities on your own or bring your family and friends along for the fun. Anglers are reminded that in Upper Peninsula waters, the walleye and northern pike possession seasons open Sunday, May 15. Michigan’s muskellunge possession season on all Great Lakes, inland waters, the St. Marys River, Lake St. Clair, and the St. Clair and Detroit rivers opens Saturday, June 4. Remember that catch-and-release fishing for muskellunge is open all year. The catch-and-immediate-release season for largemouth and smallmouth bass is open all year on nearly all waters (unless otherwise closed to fishing – check the current Michigan Fishing Guide for specifics). The possession season for bass opens statewide Saturday, May 28, except for Lake St. Clair, the St. Clair River and the Detroit River, which open Saturday, June 18. The Lake Erie, Detroit River, Lake St. Clair and St. Clair River daily possession limit for walleye will remain at six fish through April 30, 2023. The new license season began April 1, so anglers need to be sure they have purchased a new fishing license for this fishing season. The 2022 fishing licenses are valid through March 31, 2023. To purchase a fishing license, visit Michigan.gov/DNRLicenses. Anglers can make a real difference in helping to prevent the spread of invasive species by taking the time to clean, drain and dry waders and gear before heading to a new location. Two invasive species, New Zealand mudsnail and didymo (rock snot), have been detected in Michigan. Both thrive in high-quality waters and can have harmful effects on stream ecosystems. The NZMS Collaborative offers these simple steps for cleaning boots and waders:

Early goal by Hefferan Nordlund proves to be game winner
Story and photos by Tara Hefferan The Newaygo Lions shut out the Reed City Coyotes at home, with a final score of 1-0. The players described tonight’s game as a “back and forth” affair, with ball possession alternating between the two teams. Sofia Briggs and Lynnea Briones led a robust backline, largely keeping the Coyotes away from the Lions’ net. The Lions used their strong passing game to launch more shots on frame. The only goal came in the first half, as Connelly Hefferan Nordlund sent the ball into the top corner of the net, off an assist from Grace Painter. Coach Painter: "Our girls came out and played a solid game. We were able to maintain good possession throughout the game, stringing together passes that frequently resulted in shots on goal. Although we had numerous good attempts, we were only able to find the back of the net on one occasion! Sofia Briggs had another fabulous game leading our back line and initiating many of our attacks with good passes up to our midfielders. As an entire team, we continue to improve with each game!" Dominating possession proves key to conference win
Grant 4 Kent City 1 The Eagles got on the board first when they took advantage of a bit of miscommunication in the Tiger back line to punch in a goal. It turned out to be the last time the hosts would tally. Beginning with an impressive give and go between Kylie Avink and Liliana Krepps that ended with Krepps finding the back of the net the visitors took charge of the match. Keeping the ball in Eagle territory Grant’s pressure forced a Kent City penalty. Makayla Cronk took the shot and the KC keeper managed to stop the initial attempt before Cronk nailed the rebound for a score and the Tigers took the lead at 2-1 a score that would hold up until intermission. In the second half Lola Cronk became the next Tiger to tally as she sent a cannon shot into the goal to make it 3-1 Grant. Later in the half Carly Fryling fired off a long shot toward the KC goal to set up the final score when Marci Wells blistered the ball into the net. Coach Gomez de Leon: “Playing hard is simple. Playing simple is hard. My Lady Tigers have been working hard on basics and in particular possession. Today that translated onto the field as they commanded the pace and movement of ball. Most of the game was played in our opponent's half but it is clear we still have things to work on. “We had multiple opportunities at goal but we were only able to put 4 in their net. But it was a great win for Lady Tigers,” Grant (2-1, 1-0) will host Fremont (3-3, 1-1) on Friday. Game time 4:30pm Painter notches hat trick in conference opener Photos by Tara Hefferan The Newaygo Lions traveled to Lakeview for their first conference match of the season. Under snow and rain, the Lions dominated play, outscoring Lakeview 5-1. The Lions used quick passing combinations to maintain possession of the ball and stay in the offensive zone for most of the game. Grace Painter had a hat trick, with three goals and added a pair of assists while Jaxi Long tallied a goal and 3 assists. Laura Haavisto also found the back of the net for the Lions and Connelly Hefferan-Nordlund dished a pair of assists. Coach Painter: "In many ways last night's game was very similar to our Shelby game! Our girls controlled much of the possession throughout the game while Lakeview did a good job covering up shooting lanes and clogging up the box. Our midfielders and back line were crucial to our success as we worked the ball backwards to spread the field and change the point of attack. The work on the field from Lynnea Briones and Sofia Briggs won't show up in any stat line, but their efforts last night directly led to the successful outcome of the game. We also tried a couple girls in new positions last night and I was proud of how willing they were to step out of their comfort zone!"
Newaygo (3-1,1-0) is back in action Wednesday as they return to their home field for the first time in 3 weeks and welcome in the Coyotes of Reed City (3-1,1-1) for a 4:30pm match. Cronk, Krepps and Fryling find the net
Grant 3 Hart 0 Shaking off the rust after a 3 week layoff Grant shut out the visiting Pirates on Friday to move to 1-1 on the season. Coach Gomez de Leon: “The Lady Tigers were excited to get back on the field despite the cold. Stepping onto the field they had one goal in mind, possession. They started off the game with textbook plays up lateral sides and some great cross balls. Unfortunately, Tigers were not positioned well to crash the net. “Time was winding down in the first half when suddenly Freshman Lola Cronk had a breakaway down the left side of the field and sent a solid shot into the net from far left. With continued pressure in our opponent's half, Makayla Cronk, senior, took a dangerous corner from the left that crossed all the way to the far right post where Hart's defense attempted to clear. Hart's defensive player had a long first touch; to which Liliana Krepps, Freshman, took advantage of and ran in to place the ball in the back of Hart's net. “Ahead by two, Tigers wanted more and with the first half coming to an end we were becoming desperate. Unfortunately for Hart, a foul was committed for which we were awarded a direct kick. Carli Fryling, senior, took it and placed it over Hart's defensive wall, rainbowing the ball into the net. This ended the first half at 3-0 in favor of the Lady Tigers. “By the time the second half started, the Tigers were gassed and although hungry for more points Hart played a frustrating off side trap. Our defensive line led by Sydney Higgins and Avery Geisen, both seniors, was also put to the test. Overall it was a win the ladies wanted and achieved, but it definitely highlighted areas we need to work on.” The Tigers resume play and kick off their conference season Monday when they host Big Raids. Game time is 4:30pm. The Fremont Girls Track & Field squad placed 4th out of the 7 teams that participated in the Rocket Invitational held Friday afternoon at Reeths Puffer High School. The Coaches were really happy with the way the boys competed. There were 15 teams competing in the meet, 7 in the large school division (Green), and 8 in the small school division (White). We were in the white division, placing 2nd with 95 points, to Saugatucks 100.5. The athletes competed in races based on their seed time, so they raced against both divisions, but were scored only against schools in their division. In Game #1, The Indians were led offensively by Taylor Bode, Landyn McGowen, Mason Cruzan, and Zane Kukal each collectling 2 hits. On the mound, Landyn McGowen struck out 11 in 5 innings, with Alex Cruzan coming on for the Save. In Game #2, The Indians were paced by several players with one hit each. On the mound, Alex Cruzan scattered 5 hits, and struck out 6 in the 5 inning contest. Photos by Tara Hefferan Newaygo 4 Shelby 0 On a cold and windy late Wednesday afternoon the Lions returned to action in Shelby and posted a shutout win over the host Tigers. Newaygo dominated possession in the match holding Shelby to just one credible shot on goal. Meanwhile on the offensive end Grace Painter busted into the nets twice as she curved in a corner kick and added a penalty shot, Connelly Hefferan Nordlund found net off a short punt and Madi Couch took a short goal kick and sent it past the keeper as well. All 4 Lion goals were unassisted. Coach Painter: "Our back line did a nice job keeping the ball on our offensive half most of the night and held Shelby to just 2 shots on goal. On our offensive end, our mids and forwards worked to pass the ball around Shelby's defense, which was packed in the box making it difficult for us to score most of the night! Our girls kept attacking and, even though it wasn't pretty at times, they found a way to get the win!" Newaygo (2-1) wil travel to Lakeview (1-0-1) in the conference opener for both teams. VanVleet Shoots blanks at MCC
Photos by Kacey Nelson Fremont 15 Muskegon Catholic Central 6 The Packers opened the season on the road March 29th and despite a chill in the air put some hot bats on display as they banged out 10 hits while crossing the plate 15 times in a win over the Crusaders. Gabe VanVleet picked up the win as he blanked the ghosts on 3 hits over 4 innings, walking just one batter while sending 8 Crusaders back to the bench on strikes. The Pack scored 5 times in the final frame with Michae Baden, Owen Vandenberg and Brendin Maka picking up RBI’s. Vandenberg finished with 3 hits while Logan Nelson and Joey DeLong picked up a pair each. DeLong led a parade on the basepaths notching 4 of the teams ten stolen bases in the game. The Packers will be off until April 15th when they host the Ludington Orioles in a double header beginning at 4pm. |
