The defending District Champion Packers traveled to Kent City Wednesday where they battled past a tough Zeeland East before taking down Big Rapids and going undefeated on the night. The Zeeland East dual came down to the last bout of the night. Jager Kibart(pin), Matt Halasinski (pin), Chase Knudsen (pin),Kyler Kolk (pin), Austin Kukal (pin) , RJ Thome , and Cody Routley each won to give Fremont the 42-32 victory. In their second match of the evening, the Packers defeated the Cardinals by a commanding score of 64-18. Matt Long, Dennis Halasinski, Jager Kibart (pin),Trey Breuker (pin), Chase Knudsen (pin), Kyler Kolk, Austin Kukal (pin), RJ Thome, Eli Beasley (pin), Cody Routley and Adam Halasinski all posted wins against BR Fremont travels to Kent City again on Saturday for the Kent City Kick Off Classic a tournament that saw the Packers finish as runners up last season.

Boys: Lions roar back behind Swinehart, Brummell; Packers D the key GIRLS White Cloud 42 Grant 36 (Monday) The Varsity Girls opened up their season at Grant with a hard fought victory over the Tigers Monday night. The Indians were led by sharp shooter Hannah Brown who canned a game high 27 points adding 3 steals on the defensive end.. Olivia Bowman stuffed the stats with 4 points, 8 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 assists while Alexis Strait led the team in rebounds with 9. Hallie Schulz knocked down 8 points, and grabbed 4 rebounds and Cassie Watson’s motor ran for 32 minutes contributing 2 points and 7 rebounds. White Cloud opens up league play at Kent City on Friday. Fremont 42 Montague 31 The Packers prevailed in their season opener as the offense came to life in the final frame to secure the non conference win over the Wildcats. “It was very evident that it was the first game for both teams,” said Packer Coach Jon Krim. “Lots of turnovers by both and lots of easy shots missed.” Calla Miller dropped in a dozen points while picking the Montague pockets for 5 steals, Chloe Shriver hit for 11 points and Natalie Jamieson peeled off 10 rebounds in a game dominated by defense. Fremont will travel to Reed City Friday for their conference opener. Newaygo 68 Holton 41 Hesperia 76 Walkerville 42 BOYS Fremont 45 Ludington 35 The Orioles took an early 7-2 lead before the Packer defense clamped down as the visitors from Fremont went on a 12-0 run to grab the lead they would hold the remainder of the contest. “It was an incredibly athletic game played at rim level on both sides for much of the game. We played our best defensive game in many years limiting an extremely good and athletic ludington team to 35 points.” The Pack had a 10 point spread going into the final frame but the rugged Oriole team fought back to cut the margin to 3 late in the contest and began sending Packer players to the line. Tristan Campbell, Jaxx Miller, Carter Moon and Julian Echavarria each came through at the charity stripe to put the game on ice. Carter Moon led in scoring with 13 points, and “played his best game ever at point” according to Coach Zerfas. Calvin Miller hit for 11 points while taking down 10 boards and rejecting 5 Oriole attempts at the basket. Miller’s partner in the paint Logan Karnemaat also collected 10 rebounds and 5 blocks, adding 5 points while Campbell finished with 7 points, 7 rebounds and 5 blocks. The Packers are now 2-0 and will hit the road to Reed City Friday to take on the Coyotes in the conference opener for both teams. Newaygo 61 Lakeview 56 The Lions were on the road staring at a 6 point deficit at intermission in their season opener against the Wildcats, but a strong second half propelled them to victory. "Thankful to play well enough to win tonight,” said Coach Joe Barrette. “We still have a lot to fix, but always better to do after a win against a well coached tough Lakeview team" Connor Swinehart led the team in scoring as he hit for 25 points while taking down 11 boards while Ryan Brummell fired in 18 points, grabbed 5 steals and collected a half dozen rebounds The Lions will begin conference play Friday when the host Chippewa Hills. Tri County 89 White Cloud 47 Sam Venema scored 18 points and Steven Holt added a dozen but the Vikings were too much for the Cloud Tuesday as they ran to a convincing win in the cross conference matchup. Ten volleyballers from area schools were named to the Inside Out honor squads with four players securing spots on the first team In Division 3&4 sophomore and 3rd team all stater Alexis Strait of White Cloud was joined by a pair of Panthers. Hesperia sophomore Emily Bayle and senior teammate Alyssa Miller helped lead their team to a district title and were rewarded with spots on the 12 member first squad. Panther senior Ally Bayle and White Cloud junior Olivia Bowman each made the second team and Hesperia sophomore Kyra Sayer was named to the Up & Coming Team. In Division 1&2 2nd team all stater and Grant senior Olivia Keelean led a trio of Tigers by being named to the first team. Senior Kylie Patton made the second squad and junior Nicole Whan was named Honorable Mention. Fremont freshman Kaitlyn Bennett represented the Packers on the Up & Coming Team. |
