The Packers battled Big Rapids Monday afternoon in a conference match up. The Cards scored their first goal with 5 minutes to play in the first half and added two more in the second half to seal the 3-0 win for the Cardinals. Big Rapids outshot Fremont 12-5. Taylor Mulder made 9 saves in net for the Packers in the loss. The Packers fall to 7-7-1 overall.

Grant Boys go undefeated in conference; CH, CM dominate Girls meet Photos by Alicia Jaimes The Grant Tigers hosted the CSAA Championship meet, and came away the victors to cap off an undefeated conference season. Chase Konicki was the conference champion in the Shot Put. Finishing runner-up in their events were Spencer Cole in the 1600 meter run, Colten Covington in the 3200 meter run, Benny Gonzales in the 110 meter High Hurdles, TJ Railling in the Shot Put, and the 3200 meter relay of David Jaimes, Colten Covington, Eli Bradley, and Spencer Cole. Jared Evans picked up third place points in both the 100 and 200 meter dash, and he was part of third place relay teams in the 400 and 1600 meter. Fremont distance ace Nathan Walker took top honors in both the 1600m and the 3200m. The 4x800 relay team of Ben Schmidt, Colton Best, Adam Ward and Nathan Walker placed 3rd for the Packers while Wesley Ekkel leapt to a 3rd place finish in the High Jump and Corbin Wolfsen grabbed 3rd in the 110 Hurdles. Tri County’ s Nick Poprawski took 2nd in the High Jump and finished third in the 400m while teammate Cayden Luchies placed 3rd in both the 400m and the 1600m. The Newaygo relay team of Jarrod Wismar, David Gonzalez, Anthony Hudson and Zachary Rodriguez ran to a third place finish in the 4x200. Dalton Jones (2nd) and Anthony Hudson (3rd) set personal records in placing at the pole vault event and David Gonzales came within an inch of the top spot in the long jump finishing 2nd. The Girls competition was dominated by Chippewa Hills and Central Montcalm who finished 1-2.
Hannah Hamilton of Fremont won the 1600m and placed 2nd in the 3200m while fellow Packers Katie Nicholas (400m), Kendra Fowler (800m) and Leah Converse (3200m) each ran to a third place finish. The 4x400 team of Nicholas, Fowler, Hamilton and Riley Sweet came in 2nd then repeated their performance for the runner up spot in the 4x800. Tri County got a pair of 3rd place finishes from their relay teams with Madison Thun, Makaila Hojnacki, Taylor Longstreet and Summer Longstreet passing the baton in the 4x200 and Taylor Longstreet, Emily Walkowski, Makaila Hojnacki and Summer Longstreet doing the same in the 4x400. The White Cloud girls’ track team placed second at the CSAA Conference Championship meet at Kent City Thursday, May 10th. The team finished 2nd overall behind Kent City with at total of 108 points. Athletes named to the All Conference First Team are DaSheona Holland, Maya Reeve, Kayla Pasch, Lyndsey Chaffee, Ella Bowman, Janessa Shepard, and Anica Paul. Honorable mention awards go to Breanna Sutherland and Emily Feldpausch. Tiger Netters Finish Third After a two hour rain delay and cool temps, the Lady Tigers finished the conference tournament with 21 points. The girls were only 1 point behind state ranked #8 North Muskegon for 2nd place, but split head to head 4-4. The team crowned Kirstyn Throop flight champion at #4 singles. The Tigers got runner medals from Olivia Keelean at 1S and Emerson Cole at 2S. Elvira Cruz and Cecilia Ovalle upset the number 1 seed in three sets to finish with runner up medals at #3 doubles. Great job to the entire team!!! The Tigers play Sparta Tuesday for their last home dual match of the season. SOCCER Rough Road Trip For Packer Girls The Fremont girls' soccer team traveled to Comstock Park Saturday morning to compete against Cedar Springs, Zeeland West and the host Panthers. The day started out with the Packers losing a tight battle to Comstock Park 2-1. The hosts took the lead with two goals early in the second half before Sam Schmidt finished a head ball served by Holly Kortge with 5 minutes remaining in the match. The Packers outshot Comstock Park 6-2. In the second match the Packers faced Cedar Springs. The Red Hawks took the match 3-1 outshooting Fremont 8-3. Natalie Jamieson finished a corner from Holly Kortge in the second half for the Packers lone goal and Taylor Mulder made 5 saves in net for Fremont. Finally, the last match of the day was Fremont against Zeeland West. From the opening kickoff the Packers were dominated, outshot 8-2 and ended up losing 5-0. Taylor Mulder made 3 saves as keeper for the Packers. Fremont falls to 7-6-1 after the day. TRACK Packers Pick Up PR’s From Coach Cliff Somers: We had a solid showing from an individual perspective with many athletes recording season best or personal records. Ben Schmidt was our only event winner winning the 1600 with a PR of 4:27.05. White Cloud traveled to Holton to take on the league leading Red Devils and came away short on both ends of the doubleheader. In Game 1 Hannah Brown had 3 hits with a double, Madison Smith had a double with an RBI and Hallie Schulz added a double in the 5 – 1 loss. The 2nd game saw the struggles at the plate continue as the Lady Indians fell by a score of 11 – 3. Hallie Schulz had 2 hits with an RBI and Madison Smith doubled and drove in one. The Tigers took the top 3 doubles flights and 3 out of 4 in the singles to win the dual match. Brooklyn Presler and Kathryn Stong won 6-0 6-0 at #1 doubles. Senior Miriam Delgado and freshman Sydney Patin won the first set in a tiebreaker 8-6 and then 6-2 in the second. Elvira Cruz and Cecilia Ovalle won 6-3 6-1. Olivia Keelean took the top singles flight 6-2 6-0. Jill Arends and Kirstyn Throop won at 3 and 4 singles to finish out the Varsity scoring. In JV action Emma Hetler and Nya Woodland won at #1 doubles as did Beth Ann Golden and Madi Rodriguez at #2 dubs. The Tigers head to Whitehall for the conference tournament on Saturday.

The Tigers fired up the offense in the second inning scoring their first run then pulled a away with three runs in the third. Elliott Butchart drew a bases loaded walk to score a run setting the plate for a two out, two run single off the bat of Jed Vander Weide. "That was a big at bat for Jed,” said Coach Rider. “ Earlier that inning we had bases loaded with no outs and until that point had only scored one run. He battled and came up with a clutch two out hit for us." Trent Mead pitched Grant to victory going seven innings and allowing one run on four hits while striking out seven. The Tigers racked up nine hits in the game led by Vander Weide and Kyle Bay. Casey Deater led the team on the basepaths with three of the 9 Tiger thefts in the game "This was our best total game we have played this season,” added Coach Rider. “The wins are not really racking up but we are seeing progress. We are starting one senior and one junior and if this group can keep pushing forward and get stronger with the mental part of the game they will be a really fun group to watch in a couple years." The Tigers hosted a tough veteran South Christian team for the first time in school history. The teams battled strong winds as well as a little rain to get this dual match in. At the end of the match, and after two "3 set" matches, the Sailors pulled out the victory.
The Tigers got wins by senior Emerson Cole at #2 singles 6-4 6-1 and sophomore Kirstyn Throop at #4 singles 6-2 6-2. This was Throop's 14th win on the season. Junior Jill Arends came back to win her second set 6-2 and battled long and hard to take the super tiebreaker 12-10. While the Sailors swept the doubles matches the Tigers got great effort from all their flights including the #4 team of Kaitlin Pascoe and Liberty Pleune whotook their opponents to a third set before falling 10-4 Grant will travel to Reeths Puffer Thursday to face the Rockets Hat Trick Plus For Tellkamp
Nikki Tellkamp pounded the nets for 4 Grant goals and the Tigers outshot their visitors 13-11 but it wasn’t enough as the Packers used their own firepower to carve out a 5-4 win. Bre Harris fired in a pair of goals for Fremont with Elly O’Neill, Holly Kortge, and Taylor Crowley tallying one apiece. Kortge notched a pair of assists as well and Claire Whittle added another. Natalie Jamieson made 5 saves in goal for the pack now 7-3-1 on the season ans 6-3-1 in league play. Lily Scott made 6 saves in net for Grant. White Cloud 11-6 Hesperia 2-4
In softball action Tuesday night, the 5th inning proved to be the”charm”, as the Lady Indians swept the visiting Hesperia Panthers. Game 1 saw both teams go scoreless for the first 3 innings. With both teams tied at 2 heading into the bottom of the 5th, the girls put up 9 runs in their half of the inning led by a grand slam off the bat of Madison Smith. Elexis Plotts had 2 hits and 2 RBI’s, Hannah Brown had 2 hits with a 3B, Olivia Bowman had 2 hits with a 2B and 2 RBI’s, while Madeleine Seabrook, Hallie Schulz, Allison Schulz and Cierra Kneeshaw each collected 2 hits and an RBI apiece enroute to a 11-2 win. Hallie got the win striking out 5. The 2nd game was a see-saw battle for the lead with Hesperia going up by 2, WC coming back with 3 in the 4th, Hesperia answering with 2 more in the top of the 5th and the Lady Indians taking the lead for good with 3 runs of their own in the bottom of the 5th for a 6-4 victory. Elexis Plotts led the hitting getting 2 hits with a 2B and 2 RBI’s and Hannah Brown added a 3B. Kara Davis picked up the win from the circle. |
