The defendant was also sentenced to a term of 23-40 years for Child Abuse 1st Degree and sentenced as a habitual offender. As Prosecutor Stay explained: “The murder of any human being is tragic. What makes the murder of a young child like Laylah so heartbreaking is that she had so much life left to live. I hope this conviction and sentence allows Laylah's family an opportunity to begin to heal." Prosecutor Stay continued: “The evidence presented in court involved some graphic and emotional testimony. I thank the jury for their service during this lengthy trial. Further, I thank the Newaygo County Sheriff's Office for their investigation, as well as all law enforcement agencies, medical staff and lay witnesses who provided testimony at trial."
