Finance Committee Approves Grants, Grant Applications By 3 News Team The Finance Committee of the Newaygo County Board of Commissioners gave approval to accept a number of grants involving senior services, law enforcement and emergency services, while also approving the submission of applications for grants for public works initiatives and at their regular meeting on Wednesday December 7th. Emergency Services Director Abby Watkins delivered information on a series of grants that will support flood inundation mapping and gauges for the Muskegon River to help provide earlier warning and... ...awareness of river levels during periods when flooding is likely to occur.
Commission on Aging Director Joseph Fox spoke to the Fremont Area Community Foundation grants for home delivered meals and transportation programs and reported the numbers of people utilizing these programs continues to rise. Drain Commissioner and Public Works Chair Dale Twing referenced the large amount of tires that are annually being dropped off during the Hazardous Waste Collection Day as the committee approved a DEQ Grant application for tire cleanup. The committee also approved the application for the Medical Marihuana Operation and Oversight Grant to the state. Each of the above initiatives will be voted on b y the full board next Wednesday at their 9:30am meeting. In other business Drew Robinson reported to the committee about the preparations for the upcoming recount and the amount of resources that it would be requiring, however later in the day it was ruled that the action began on Monday in parts of the state would halt. Administrator Chris Wren reported that Newaygo is currently tied for 17th of the 83 counties in our state for lowest unemployment rate. Newaygo held a 4.1% rate in October while Michigan stood at 4.7% and the U.S was at 4.9%. Comments are closed.
