Board Honors Daniel Pence By N3 News Team The Newaygo County Board of Commissioners honored Army Sergeant Daniel J. Pence for his service during the Viet Nam War at their regular meeting on Wednesday September 28th. Mr. Pence was also presented with the array of medals awarded to him but not delivered... ... until just recently after he had contacted the National Personnel Records Center.
Steven Cain the Newaygo County Veteran’s Service Officer presented them to Mr. Pence in a shadowbox case as his family , members of the Veteran’s Affairs Committee, and community members looked on. At the end of the ceremony the dozens of people present at the meeting delivered a standing ovation to Mr. Pence who was visibly moved by the gesture. The Board elected Helen Taube, Mary Helmus, and Becky Beets to the Commission on Aging Board, and also voted in Brian Hettinger, Cynthia Harwood and Randy Wright to the Central Dispatch Authority Board. The Board adopted a resolution for new fee schedule for the Sheriff’s Department adding a $10 notary fee for a pistol purchase license a $5 fee for a Preliminary Breath Test (PBT) and $10 for a records check. The board passed a 2% pay increase for elected officials, department heads, unclassified employees, and part time employees. Members of the Board of Commissioners will not receive the increase. In other business Administrator Chris Wren announced that Nicholas D. Smith has been hired as the new Parks Director and will begin his duties on October 3rd. Commissioner Jim Maike expressed his appreciation to Parks Board Chairman Dale Twing for his efforts in helping the parks department during the interim period between directors.
