The Gerber Foundation Promotes Early Literacy With $10,000 Gift to the Newaygo County Imagination Library
In October 2014, the Gerber Foundation partnered with Newaygo County Regional Educational Service Agency (RESA) to help provide books to the children of Newaygo County through the Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library has become the premier early childhood book gifting program in the world. Currently, the program mails over one million specially selected, age-appropriate books monthly to children from birth to age five. Dolly’s vision was to create a lifelong love of reading, prepare children for school and inspire them to dream. Each month a new, carefully selected book is mailed directly to the enrolled child. There is no cost or obligation to families. Today, the Newaygo County Imagination Library Program provides almost 400 children in Newaygo County with free, age-appropriate books in the mail each month. “This gift from the Gerber Foundation, will provide additional children and families in Newaygo County with the opportunity to receive free books in the mail each month to build a strong foundation for a love of reading. I encourage all families to find just 15 to 20 minutes each day to read together with their child, to help them build important reading skills for future school success,” said Nicole Skrabis, Newaygo County RESA, Director of Early Childhood and Elementary Learning Services. “We are so grateful to NC RESA for hosting this Dolly Parton Imagination program for Newaygo County children,” said Cathy Obits, Program Manager for the Gerber Foundation. “Early literacy is the foundation for nearly all future learning, so ensuring reading skills prior to these children beginning school is extremely important. And, once achieved, it is something that no one can take away.” Newaygo County residents who have preschool children ages birth to five are eligible to sign up their children to receive free books from Dolly’s Library. Interested in the program? Contact the Newaygo County RESA at (231) 652-3843 to find out how to register your child.
