By Ken DeLaat This past Friday night Lil and I decided to Thai one on. We finally scored some take-out at Kinn Thai Cafe in Newaygo and it has already been added to our favorite local eatery options. A fairly extensive menu with a variety of featured dishes, one can choose from mild to moderate to hot when it comes to the sauce. Lil went with a noodle dish, Pad See Yew, and I went with the Mixed Veggie Stir Fry. She ordered mild, and I went with moderate. After a few mouthfuls the ‘moderate’ sauce began to make its presence known requiring a refill or two of my water and I was ok with having not given in to my desire to try the hot. We also had the veggie spring rolls as an appetizer, crisp coated with a definite cabbage-oriented taste and likely to be part of future orders. If, like some of us, you cohabitate with a vegetarian who also eschews seafood there are challenges in going out to eat locally unless you love Mac and Cheese. Well, Kinn Thai has a number of vegetarian (and vegan) options and they offer tofu as a protein choice. There are 3 tables for two, two tables for four and a high top. The place is well lit, clean, neat and the take-out process was seamless. Highly recommend giving our newest eatery a try. And if your tastes bend toward spicy-hot I believe their sauce with the highest level of heat will be right up your alley. I plan on giving my “It’s never too hot for me” 16yo grandson Parker a shot at the top-level sauce next time he’s in town to see if he can meet the challenge. Kinn Thai is located in the Leppink's Plaza. You can order in person, by phone or online. And as always tell them Ken sent you and they will look at you puzzled, adding “Ken who?” Here's their website for more information: Home

Photos by Lil De Laat Story by Ken DeLaat Man, that was fun. A whole lot of fun. 1964: The Beatles Tribute band took to the Main Stage of the Dogwood Friday night and captivated the audience with a polished delivery featuring 90 straight minutes of those classic Beatles tunes and treating those of us fortunate enough to be there with a little time travel. There were over 3 dozen songs in that lengthy set and when the Dogwood crowd wouldn’t quit clapping and yelling for more, the quartet returned to send a 15-minute encore as a goodbye note to their most appreciative fans. With a crowd consisting mostly of folks who were likely around when the original Fab Four hit the states, the performance was a romp through memoryland. Each song brought sighs and sounds of recognition from the audience and when exhorted by the band to join in on some of the well-known songs, few held back from breaking out their best vocals. At one point they encouraged couples to get up and go cheek to cheek (“or turn around and face each other” as ‘John’ wryly suggested) and sway to the romantic “If I Fell”. Asked by my long-time dancing partner to give it a go, we managed to get in a few steps on the balcony platform behind our seats before settling back in for the rest of the show. This latest offering by the Dogwood was a winner. The tribute band not only succeeded in touching our younger lives, they brought us back to when the Liverpool lads changed the music, as well as the hairstyles, for an entire generation. The 60’s were an era of great change, and the Beatles had a huge impact on many of those changes. Friday’s concert was a reminder of the musical Tsunami they created. The only thing missing last night? No screaming. My sister Sue told me what it was like when she saw the original Beatles perform during their American tours, and unlike her experience, we could definitely hear the music. And the music was sublime. “The Beatles are the greatest cultural force that we have ever had.”- Steven Spielberg. If you don’t hunt, you might as well shop. And maybe score a bountiful basket.
As anyone who has resided in our slice of this peninsular paradise for more than a week is well aware, Saturday, November 15th is Opening Day of the Firearm Deer Season. Many hunters leave town for camps, and some stay around but may as well be absent since they will be either hunting, preparing to hunt, or talking about hunting. A perfect storm for Ladies Day, a city-wide event from 10am-3pm involving the stores and eateries that make up the Fremont shopping landscape. With an absolute plethora of participating merchants, many offering snacks, discounts and giveaways, the town looks to be hopping with shopping and one supposes that not a word about hunting will be shared at the local lunch spots. And did we mention the prizes? Five sumptuous gift baskets await the winners each worth approx. $500-$600 with a bonus gift basket by downtown newcomer Ageless Units valued over $2000. In addition, the folks at The Bedroom Center have pitched in one of those wonderful cooling pillows, a boon to those who tend toward needing a bit of a nocturnal cool down. How do you win? Well, it’s easy. Each business you make an appearance at will give you a card and after filling it in with your name and phone number these can be dropped off at the CBD of Michigan store where the drawing will take place at 3:15pm. You might want to make an early stop at the CBD store since we’ve heard owner Rod Glupker will be offering some charcuterie to go with a bit of wine and sangria. Ladies Day is a fun event that promotes and supports our local businesses. And here are the nearly 3 dozen participating merchants where you can pick up your lucky card.
