Grammy nominated pianist Judy Carmichael will perform on the Dogwood Center main stage on November 9 at 7:30 p.m.! Judy is one of the world’s leading interpreters of stride piano and swing. Count Basie nicknamed her “Stride,” acknowledging the command with which she plays this technically and physically demanding jazz piano style. Judy has taken this infectious style of music and her equally infectious personality everywhere from posh nightclubs in Paris and Melbourne to Carnegie Hall and a Rio concert for ten thousand Brazilians; from Arundel Castle to Castle Fraser for the National Trust of Scotland. Carmichael has been featured on A Prairie Home Companion, NPR’s Morning Edition, Entertainment Tonight, CBS’ Sunday Morning, CNN’s Business Unusual, and the BBC’s Loose Ends, In Tune, Up All Night, Woman’s Hour and numerous other shows. Celtic Roots music trio, Kalos will perform in the Dogwood Center Black Box on October 25 at 7:30 p.m. The Kalos alliance echoes a definition of the Greek word, “good that inspires others to embrace what is lovely.” Well-schooled in their craft with years of experience, each specialist brings excellent credentials to the group. They love to share music that resonates with them, the traditional music of New England and the British Isles. Kalos features Ryan McKasson (fiddle, viola, vocals), Eric McDonald (guitar, mandolin, lead vocals), and Jeremiah McLane (accordion, piano, vocals). All three are longstanding touring artists who, as part of their development, learned from masters of traditional music. Their individual artistry springs from these strong traditional roots. While much of Kalos’ material is rooted in traditional forms, this does not limit the trio’s scope and collective imagination is the primary expression in its music. Join us at the Dogwood Center on Saturday, October 12 for a very special evening of poetry and music with “The Mad Angler meets the Mad Cellist”, featuring Michael Delp and Crispin Campbell. This moving and expressive performance will feature Delp’s Mad Angler poems paired with Campbell on cello. Delp was an instructor of creative writing at the Interlochen Center for the Arts. Delp’s literary works have been recognized and highlighted at Michigan State University in their Michigan Writers Series. He is known for writing about nature, especially fishing and water. Crispin Campbell is the principal cellist of the Traverse City Symphony Orchestra and a retired Instructor of Cello at Interlochen Arts Academy. Poet Delp and cellist Campbell team up for this performance that provides Delp’s alter ego, The Mad Angler, whose magical vignettes counterbalanced with Campbell’s cello improvisations, with The Mad Cellist echoing the sounds of the river, the raucous calls of the crows, and the down and dirty earthiness of the blues. Also featured will be master Dobro player Joe Wilson of Steppin’ In It, and inventive jazz pianist Steve Stargardt who will be joining Campbell in the interludes between the poetry of The Mad Angler. This unique program celebrates the living nature of water, Michigan’s most precious resource, in an evening of humor, irreverence, sincerity and profound truth.
