their sweet, big band music to the Dogwood Center on Saturday, June 11, to a very appreciative crowd. With big smiles from audience members as each piece was introduced, one could see they had wonderful, fond memories of each selection. The band authentically re-created the music and presentation of the swing era of the 30’s and 40’s with an infusion of “Rat Pack” material from the 50’s. Crooner Paul King was a smooth addition to the band, with his vocals a Frank Sinatra style. From “Moonglow”, “Begin the Beguine” to “Cheek to Cheek”, the audience was brought back to an era of light mood music and toe-tapping times. The evening was also “Dogwood Volunteer Appreciation Night” and the presentation of this year’s “Don Heaven Volunteer of the Year Award”. Volunteers from all of our communities here in Newaygo County provide countless... The Suggestion Box
By Ken DeLaat Wow. Lots to look forward to this weekend as the area will be hopping with happenings. To those of us at N3 World Headquarters and Teapot Emporium (a collection known to be well into 3 figures, though even more might be stored in some hidden cache) three things pop out as highlights for the second weekend of one of our favorite months. Maybe Not Every Day, But Certainly Saturday When I was young I recall asking my Mom “So, there’s a Mother’s Day and a Father's Day, when is Children’s Day” Her reply? The same one I gave my children when they...
even the biggest frogs you may ever see can all be experienced on the Camp Newaygo Wetland Trail, just a few miles from the town of Newaygo. The boardwalk trail through the wetland, a sphagnum bog, allows for easy access to this marvelous area.
The first portion of the one mile long trail was built in 1986 by community members and camp staff, with a second portion of the trail completed in 2015. The trail placement and built-in observation areas skirt interesting plant life throughout, including sphagnum moss, the green carpet-like masses that give this type of wetland part of its name. Fortunate to be one of the trail-builders in 1986, I experienced the beauty of the wetland first-hand during the build. Designing and fundraising for the trail by camp staff and community members began in...
After polishing off a 3rd or 4th road trip with Jack Kerouac one night and not yet ready for sleep I took it up and began a henceforth love affair with the writings of Jim Harrison that continues to this day. His departure this past March left a literary hole in the hearts of his readers.
In this segment of What We’re Reading we welcome Gabe Konrad who has brought the bounty of a fine book store to our area and possesses a passion for poetry. Below, he renders his thoughts on Harrison contemporaries who like Mr. Harrison have been influenced by their peninsular roots. Harrison Revenant By Gabe Konrad After the initial shock from the death of Jim Harrison—the prolific novelist and poet that we Near Northerners like to claim as our own—we can console ourselves that he left behind so many great books and what is really a family of great poets. Two of the well-established Michigan poets that Harrison fans will enjoy are... Gangster Gala To Aid Museum, Love INC.
Sheiks and Sheba’s, Guys and Molls, here’s your chance to collect some dough without having some flatfoot wanting to send you to The Big House. Sportsman’s Bar the downtown dining spot in Newaygo a city with a lot of history will be calling on folks to bring back some of that history as they invite the citizenry to the Gangster Gala this Saturday night. Grab some gangster garb, impress the judges and you could walk away with a C-note in cold hard cash for being the best dressed flapper or racketeer in the whole juke joint. The event celebrates the intriguing Bootleggers and Gangsters exhibit currently enjoying a popular run at the Newaygo Museum and... Megan Again By Megan Wirts I spend a lot of time on social media. Probably too much time. I am involved with Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, YouTube, etc. I can’t keep it all straight. I started with a MySpace page back in 2005. You could listen to new music and follow your friends. You could also cause major drama by taking someone out of your Top 8. It was a whole new world. Then in 2008 I followed the masses over to Facebook. When I was going to college and then subsequently working it was just a way to share photos of my kids with family and friends occasionally sprinkling in a funny story or random thought. It was nice to reconnect with people and be able to stay in touch with friends that were far from home. Then I became disabled, had to quit working and...

According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary a Bucket List is, “a list of things that one has not done before but wants to do before dying.” I have tried to sit down and write my own Bucket List a number of times. When I do, I realize that there are things I want to accomplish that I don’t even know about yet and it also feels a little morbid, but mostly I’m kind of lazy. So...anyway, my personal Bucket List has never been written, just thought about and stored in the back of my mind. The idea was made popular by the 2007 movie Bucket List starring Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson and since then it’s kind of turned into one of those buzzwords. There are bucket lists for every occasion now. Since I haven’t been able to... Tales of a Texas Transplant: Road Trip Down South By Charles Chandler One of the many benefits of moving to a new part of the world is that you get to meet new people, see and experience new things, and learn new stuff. And on rare occasions, all these elements come together in a singular event, like a road trip with a new good friend, Jim Charvat a great guy that I first met on a North Country National Scenic Trail work project in the Manistee National Forest near White Cloud. With Jim it was instant like and then discovery of a mutual fascination with big trees. Jim is a true renaissance man and a self-taught naturalist with an impressive knowledge of Michigan flora specializing in big trees and wild edibles. Last year I took him on a kayak trip down a stretch of our local White River to meet this giant cottonwood growing on private property but viewable from the river. He in turn he had invited me on... |
