Top 3 teams qualify for the State Finals
Top 15 individuals qualify
We thought we could qualify if we placed 5 in the top 30, but we also knew that it was going to tight for places 3 through 6. We ran a good race beating some teams that we haven't before and ended up placing 4th. While we were disappointed to finish 4th I was pretty happy with the way the girls ran. Our 1-5 split was about a minute fifteen, a little over what we wanted, but part of that was due to the break out race by Emma Metz (So). The girls got out in decent position to be able to move up in the second loop of the double loop course. Starting the second loop Emma and Riley Sweet (Sr) were in 16th and 17th places. Both girls started to move up into the qualifying spots together. By the two mile mark they were in the top 15. With about 3/4 of a mile to go Emma had moved up to 8th with Riley hanging on to 15th. Kendra Fowler (Jr) was moving up into the top 30 with Hannah Hamilton (Jr) starting to charge hard. Sammy Schmidt (Jr) was running in about 38th and Leah Converse (Fr) and Annika Tuls (So) moving up. Coming into the last 400 Emma had fallen back to 11th while Riley had fallen to 19th. Kendra was hanging on in the 20s while Hannah had a great finish to finish a few seconds ahead of Kendra. Sammy came in at 38th with Leah and Annika finishing strong also. The girls ran a good race and improved on last years 6th place finish at Regionals.
We thought we would have to place 5 in the top 15 to win and we were right. Ceder Springs put 5 in the top 15 to beat us by 3 points. The boys got the job done up front going 1, 2, 3, with Ben Schmidt (Sr), Nathan Walker (Fr), and Colton Best (Fr). Josh Zerfas (Fr) ran 4th for us getting out very aggressively and trying to hang on in the last mile. Ben Paige (Fr) on the other hand got out a little slow and was trying to chase people down in the last mile. Carter Moon (So) also was working hard to chase in the last mile, with James Pekel (Sr) trying to hang on in the last mile. Colton Best did a great job getting through a rough patch where he had fallen back to 5th place. He recovered well to move back up into 3 and put a gap on the 4th place runner. Nathan and Colton ran well together until the start of the 2nd loop where Nathan started to put a gap on the rest of the field. In the morning session an athlete from Harbor Springs broke the course record running 15:41. The record didn't last very long as Ben Schmidt smashed that time beating the field by over a minute running 15:13. We ran a solid race but still need to improve on on 2 -5 split. The boys and Emma will be running next Saturday in the State Finals in the afternoon session.

One day. One race. One chance to qualify for the State Meet.
The temperature was in the 30s. Rain was driving through the air at a sideways angle. Snow even mixed itself into the air.
But none of that mattered to the runners at the Regional meets across the state of Michigan. Because for some this would be the last race of the season. And for others it would be their only chance to race their way to the State Meet.
In order to qualify, a runner must finish in the top 15 individuals or be a part of one of the top 3 teams from the Region.
Two athletes from the Newaygo Lions cross country team qualified for State: senior Ellie Nausadis and junior Ryan Brummel.
Ellie Nausadis ran on the edge of the 15 qualifiers for the first two miles of the race. She asserted her experience and wisdom from four years of competing and propelled herself into 12th with 200 meters left in the race. When she crossed the finish line, she was in 14th place, earning her 2nd trip to Michigan International Speedway on November 3rd.
Ryan Brummel started in a pack of 45-50 boys who all were determined to find themselves in the top 15. Slowly but surely that pack started to thin itself out as the pace was too intense for most. The top runner was 20 meters ahead at the mile mark, but the pack following him was still at 25. By the 2 mile mark that pack had stretched out, with 20 still surviving the pace. It was in the third mile that the top 15 had asserted their dominance, with Ryan Brummel finishing solidly in 9th to earn his first trip to MIS.
In addition to Ellie for the girls team, senior Alexis Brocker and freshman Jaylee Long both ran personal records (PRs) despite the excruciating cold and wet ground. Sophomore Sophia Frisbie, junior Samantha Dosch, sophomore Liza Nausadis and freshman Anna Brummel rounded out the varsity 7 for the Lions.
The boys team came to race. In addition to Brummel’s PR, five others of the varsity 7 also set PRs for their careers. Junior David Grodus, senior Nolan Brockway, freshman Brandon Badgero, sophomore Dylan Heminger, and freshman Blaise Brockway earned those PRs. Sophomore Bret Bays rounded out the varsity team for the Lions.
