Welcome Back: Lions, Packers Renew Rivalry
By Alexis Mercer
Six years ago, the last time the Fremont Packers and the Newaygo Lions football teams faced off, the Packers were victorious by one touchdown. This time, on Fremont’s rain drenched field, the Newaygo Lions ran away with a resounding 35-6 victory.
It was clear from the start of the game that it was not going to be a night of perfectly executed plays thanks to the sloppy weather. This game would...
...go to the team who was willing to play through the sloppy mess that had become the field and Newaygo seemed up to the challenge from the start.
“Overall I was very happy with our effort on a rainy, nasty night,” said Newaygo Head Coach Andy Busch. “ It was an ugly, sloppy mess on the field but the guys had fun playing in the slop and that was fun to see.”
“I was also pleased to see our guys come out of the locker room in the second half ready to play and put four quarters of good football together with a strong team effort,” added the coach.
The first half proved to have more scoring than the second, with the teams heading into the locker room 21-6. The second half, the Lions scored two more touchdowns and the defense held the Packers scoreless.
Both teams will be facing familiar rivals next week as Newaygo travels to Tri County to face the Vikings while the Pack heads to Grant to take on a Tiger team looking to move closer to a playoff berth with a win.
