V-Ball Districts: Tigers Advance With Win Over Lions
By Marianne Boerigter
A strong Grant team won a volleyball District title on Thursday evening, beating Newaygo in three games, 25-7, 25-10 and 25-14.
Game one started with both teams strong in offense and defense, but the momentum of Grant's offense caused Newaygo Coach Bethany DuChemin to call an early timeout at a score of 8-2.
The Grant offense came out even stronger after the timeout though with a monster hit by Laura Bouwkamp, and...
...two blocks by Kylie Patton. Newaygo tried to shift momentum once again with a timeout at an 18-7 score, but the floater serves of Grant's Olivia Keelean were too tough to handle and Newaygo fell 25-7.
In the second game, Newaygo saw solid front row play by Kaitlyn Gribowski and lefty Jenna Janke. Grant's highlights included a big block by Keelean, a well-timed dump set by Sierra Schuitema, as well as her ace on serve. Grant took game 2 at 25-10.
In game three, Newaygo's Janke had two strong kills and Katie Bourden served a spectacular ace, but Grant's offense proved too strong for the Newaygo defense to handle. Front row play by Bouwkamp and sophomore Patton led Grant to win the game 25-14.
"It was a fun night for our girls as they won their 6th District championship in a row,” said Tiger Head Coach Tricia Schuitema. “The girls have had this as one of their goals from the beginning of the season and they have worked hard to get to this point.”
“We have several of our players peaking at the right time in our season and we are looking forward to Regionals."
The Tigers are ranked 9th by the Michigan Interscholastic Volleyball Coaches Association for Class B Michigan schools, with a current overall record of 49-10-1.
Grant will move on to Regional Tournament play at Fremont High School on Tuesday November 8 at 7:30 p.m. to face the Falcons of West Catholic.
