Track: Packers Shine In Distance Events
By Coach Cliff Somers
We had a good showing at last night’s West Michigan Invitational. The meet invites the top athletes from the Muskegon area to compete against each other in an All-Star meet. Fremont athletes who were invited were; Seth Vogal, Ryan Geeting, Bruno Cipolla, Matthew Zerfas, Ben Schmidt, Cole Hamilton, and Sam Kaastra.
There were no team scores.
The highlights of the meet for us were in the distance events. The 4x800 relay team of Sam Kaastra, Ben Schmidt, Cole Hamilton, and Matthew Zerfas set a season record running 8:13.83. This included a 2:00 split by Sam, with a nifty pass squeezing between two competitors, to lead things off, and a 1:56 anchor by Matthew to move us up from 5th to 3rd.
In the 1600 Sam ran a PR of 4:27.08 with a great battle in the home straight to place 2nd. Matthew placed 2nd in the 800 with a time of 1:58.77, making a great move in the last 150 to move from 5th to almost 1st. He just ran out of track and was beat by 1 hundredth of a second.
Ben Schmidt seized control of the 3200 right from the gun and ran solo to the win in 9:45.61. Sam placed 2nd, pulling away from 3rd in the last 300, with a time of 9:51.6
