After advancing into the Gold Division at the prestigious West Michigan Volleyball Officials Association scholarship tournament with only one game lost in pool play Grant marched through the competition winning three more matches and the tournament.
The Tigers defeated Zeeland West in the finals Friday to bring home...
... the hardware in their season opener.
“All of our girls played really well,” said Tiger Head Coach Tricia Schuitema. “Taylor Wegener did a great job passing and playing defense and Kylie Patton is a force to be reckoned with in the middle.”
“Sierra Schuitema, our senior setter is great, as is Laura Bouwkamp on the outside, and Ashley Herin at Libero has returned from injury with a vengeance.“
“Sophomores Olivia Keelean and Jill Arends have stepped into needed roles and are playing well, while Josie Snyder and Olivia Anderson are serving well and playing a vital part in our early success.”
Fresh off their long day on the courts the Tigers traveled to Allendale on Saturday for another tournament and this time finished second, losing in the finals to the Zeeland West team they defeated the day before.
Grant defeated Holland 25-9, 25-14, Allendale 25-16, 25-10, Muskegon Orchard View 25-16, 25-17, and took the semi final matchup with Holland Christian 25-19, 25-18 before falling in 3 sets to the Dux 20-25, 25-22, 16-17.
“It was an adventurous day with a tornado warning delay in the middle of our first semi final set against Holland Christian!” said Coach Schuitema. “That's the first time we have ever had that happen to us during a Saturday tournament!“
“Zeeland West has a good team and they battled for the win. Heat and fatigue from two long days of volleyball was definitely a factor for probably both teams.”
“We are going to have a great season,” Coach Schuitema added. “I've got a great group of student-athletes and I’m very proud of their efforts over the last two days.”
