Tiger Wrestlers Cap Off Stellar Season, Place 3rd At State
The Grant Wrestling team set a new school record with 3 State Medalists at the MHSAA individuals finals. The team set new records each step of the way through the MHSAA tournament with 10 regional qualifiers, 7 State qualifiers, and now 3 All State Athletes.
The Tigers started off slow in the opening round on Thursday March 2nd going 1-6 in the opening round with only senior Rylee Schultz 189lbs earning a victory over his Ovid-Elsie opponent. The Friday morning round saw junior Jimmy Montney 152lbs, senior Danny Atwood 160lbs, freshman Billy Ostyn 112lbs, and junior Jagarr Jenerou 130lbs earn wins to stay alive while Junior Kalub Bonter 145lbs and senior Jacob Brandow 160lbs lost close matches to end their exciting seasons.
Rylee Schultz lost 0-2 in the quarterfinals, setting up 5 Tigers...
...for a win or go home match in the "blood round". Jimmy Montney earned the first victory by an 8-5 decision over his Clawson opponent to move on the placement matches. Danny Atwood lost by decision to his Croswell Lexington opponent ending his fantastic season and Rylee Schultz came back to beat his Corunna opponent and move on.
Billy Ostyn lost by decision to his Ida opponent ending his freshmen season just short of a medal and Jagarr Jenerou ended the day strong beating his Portland opponent 2-1. On Saturday Montney lost 4-3 putting him in the 7th place match while Schultz beat his Coloma opponent 3-2 avenging a loss at regionals to continue on.
Jagarr lost by 1 point to the returning state runner-up also putting him in the 7th place match. Schultz then won his next match in exciting fashion getting a two point reversal to pull ahead with less than 30 seconds remaining and putting him in the 3rd place match. Jimmy Montney lost to his Comstock Park opponent 8-4, to finish in 8th place and earn all-state status.
Rylee Schultz lost to his Iron Mountain opponent for the 2nd time at the state meet putting him at 4th place in the state to finish his high school career. Rylee completed a 52 win season, tied for 2nd most in school history.
Jagarr Jenerou capped off the Tigers season with a 6-0 shutout to earn the 7th place medal.
