Tiger Netman Pick Up A Pair Of Wins
By N3 Sports Team
Facing back-to-back conference foes the Tiger tennis team won both in convincing fashion to stay undefeated in conference play.
The Tigers traveled to Ludington Tuesday and came home with a 6-2 victory over a young and tough Oriole team. The two teams had faced each other at the first tournament of the year, with Ludington having...
...a slight advantage but on this day, the Tigers turned 3 of those matches around.
Grant's doubles teams all won in straight sets while Dominick Brock at #3 singles and Shayne Gardner at #2 singles each posted straight set wins as well. In the last match of the night, a 2 and 1/2 hour, 3 set, number 1 singles battle, saw Ludington pulling out a 6-4 3rd set win over freshman Karlton Zerlaut.
"Ludington has always been a top notch tennis program and they were a top 5 team last year, “ said Tiger Head Coach Scott Zerlaut. “I have a ton of respect for the legacy that has been build up there.”
“They have a handful of young guys that are solid players and we had to play really well to beat them,” he added. “ We have a lot of senior guys powering our doubles and they really came through tonight. I expected some tough matches and many of the second sets were tight. We were actually down in a few of them and our guys dug in and came back to get the wins in 2 sets.”
“Shayne Gardner at #2 singles continues to play well and picked up a big win in a rematch from the first tournament of the year. Shayne lost in 3 sets that day, but pulled out a 6-4 6-4 win tonight on the road."
On Wednesday the Tigers made it 4-0 in league play with a 7-1 victory at Western Michigan Christian. Seniors Andrew Stong and Spencer Johnston won at #4 doubles 6-0 6-0 and freshman Karlton Zerlaut gave up only a single game winning 6-0 6-1.
Shayne Gardner and Dominick Brock also triumphed in singles while #1 Doubles Nicholas Horrisberger and Mason Ferguson, #2 Spencer Naffsinger and Tony Hubbard, and #3 Christian Ledezma and David Jaimes completed the doubles sweep.
