Tennis: Vikings Top Tigers For CC Title
By N3 Sports Team
he Tigers traveled west on Wednesday to face the tough Whitehall team in a showdown for the Coastal Conference title. Weather forced the match to be stopped and resumed indoors at Norton Pines. The Vikings came into the match ranked 4th in the state.
The team had three 3 Set matches, but...
...could only win one. In the last match of the night, seniors Andrew Stong and Spencer Johnston came from a set down to win 2-6 6-3 6-4. Karlton Zerlaut and Shayne Gardner went 3 sets as well, but couldn't get a win from #1 or #2 singles. The Tiger netters played extremely well and went toe to toe at #1 and #2 doubles as well.
I'm extremely proud of the way the guys fought and battled,” said Tiger Head Coach Scott Zerlaut. “Whitehall is always tough and this year is no exception. They finished 4th last year at the state tournament. “
“We knew this would be a difficult road test. Our team has never been in the position of having to play a match to be league champs. The players gave it everything they had. There were a ton of great points out there. We didn't cave in to the pressure and the guys stepped it up.”
“Shayne played one of his best sets of tennis at 2 singles, Karlton took a set off one of the top senior #1 singles guys in the area and our seniors at #4 doubles (Stong and Johnston) played a fantastic match,” Coach Zerlaut added. “Andrew chased down some shots that were just incredible. He and Spencer didn't give up after the first set and played some amazing tennis. Their opponents were hitting great shots as well. It was just a great match."
The team was scheduled to travel to Big Rapids Thursday to face the Cardinals.
