Tamarac Turkey Trot Invites Community To Donate Shoes
Runners, joggers and walkers—and anyone in the community—are invited to donate their shoes to people in need during the annual Tamarac Turkey Trot when they pick up their race packets on the day before Thanksgiving and on race day itself.
Packet pick-up and late registration are from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Nov. 23 and 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day in the front lobby at Tamarac, a member of Spectrum Health.
Donors are invited to drop off gently used or even new shoes for kids and adults. Avid runners often consider their shoes past prime when they’ve...
...logged between 300 to 500 miles, and typically no longer use those shoes. In many cases, those shoes can still be in decent condition, despite the miles, said Tracey Crowley, Tamarac fitness instructor and a certified running coach.
“The annual Turkey Trot is a community event and here at Tamarac, we’re always looking for ways we can give back to our neighbors in need,” said Amanda Irwin, Tamarac wellness manager. “Donated shoes can play a positive role in a person’s life, from kids who can go to school with their head high to an adult who can walk to the store in comfort, exercise for their health or apply for a job. Because we’ve seen the impact shoes can have, we wanted to provide a way for people who may have some extra shoes lying around their homes to bring them in and donate them for a good cause.“
The shoes donated during the Turkey Trot check-in at Tamarac will be sent to True North, which will distribute them to families and individuals in need.
“True North and the people we serve are always grateful to Tamarac and Spectrum Health Gerber Memorial for always stepping up to support our community, especially as we enter the holiday season,” said Dave Wingard, Director of Research and Strategic Development at TrueNorth Community Services. “With the weather getting colder, good shoes are critical to so many people to continue living their lives independent and with dignity. We join Tamarac in encouraging anyone with shoes they can spare to donate as they check in for the Turkey Trot.”
