Sparta Regionals- Monday March 13
Grant vs. GR Catholic Central 7:30 pm
It’s a return to Regional play for Grant Monday night when they travel to Sparta HS to take on the GR Catholic Central Cougars in game number 2 of the evening. The OK Blue Champs knocked off league rival Comstock Park at the Panther’s home gym to get here.
GRCC won their first 9 games this season before being dismantled by GR Christian one of the elite Class A teams in the state. After that loss...
...they went through the rest of their conference play losing only once, to Allendale, and dropped non-league games to East Kentwood and West Ottawa. They’re young and talented and can score points.
But so can Grant. The Tigers have come together as a team and their march through the districts showed they can snatch an early lead and take charge of a game or come back and finish off a close one on top.
We are very focused,” said Coach Matt McCorkle who has deftly guided this Tiger team to success. “We have 7 seniors who are the heart and soul of this team. They have been successful in the past and don't want the journey to end.
“I think our experience is key. While I wasn't the coach last year, some of the guys on my team made it to the Regional Semis and lost to Forest Hills Eastern. They know that bitter taste of defeat at this round. It's their chance for a do over and get to the Regional Final."
The Cougars have four players over 6’6” led by 6’9”junior Marcus Bingham Jr.
“Marcus Bingham Jr. is a great player that transferred in for CC,” said Coach McCorkle He is 6'9"-----6'10" but that doesn't mean anything to us. We respect his size and talent but at the same time they have to defend us.
“We have played against other top talent like Demetri Martin from Big Rapids who is 6'6". I have been fortunate to have been able to scout Catholic Central a couple of times. I know what we are getting. We will be ready. “
“One thing my boys are is prepared.”
Spring Lake vs. Hudsonville Unity Christian 5:30 pm
In the opener Hudsonville Unity Christian the 18-4 champions of the OK Green will be taking on the Lakers of Spring Lake who defeated Whitehall the WMC Champions in their District final. The Vikings lost just twice before falling to Spring Lake. Their season opener to Grant and 6 weeks later to Fremont. The Lakers finished third in the OK Blue behind GRCC and Coopersville.
The winners will play Wednesday at 7pm for a chance to advance to the Quarterfinals.
