Packers Reach Regional Finals Before Bowing Out
By N3 Sports Team
The Pack made it to the Championship game in Regional play but they ran into Charlie May one of Gaylord’s premier moundsmen who fired a no-hitter, baffling the Fremont players with an array of off speed pitches to go with a blazing fastball.
Brandon Clark did his part on the mound holding the Blue Devils to a lone run in the third inning and just 2 hits but May put a silencer on the Packer bats to send Gaylord to Saginaw Valley State University for a quarterfinal matchup with...
...Linden in the next step toward the D-2 crown. Fremont posed a couple of threats including a 6th inning opportunity when they put runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out but a strikeout and a great catch on a foul ball snuffed out the chance to score.
The Packers got to the finals with a tough 2-0 win over Escanaba as Nate Hoffman took a no-hitter of his own into the 5th inning when two singles and a walk loaded the bases with one out and the top of the Eskimo order coming to the plate. Hoffman got the next two hitters on a pop up and a ground out to end the last real threat to his shutout and the Packers moved on. Hoffman’s efforts were buoyed by flawless defensive play behind him as his teammates recorded not a single error in the contest.
Fremont scored both their runs in the 2nd when a pair of walks and a seeing eye single by James Pekel combined with a throwing error at third to score Connor Cook with the first run and a wild pitch plated Pekel with the second.
The Packers, under the tutelage of Coach Foster, ended their most successful season in over three decades adding a D-2 District Championship to Fremont’s trophy case.
