Coming off a stellar performance against Tri County the Packers came into Tuesday’s showdown with Whitehall feeling good about their game but facing a Viking squad that has established themselves as one of the area’s best. After losing to Grant in their opener the West Michigan Conference leaders ran off 8 straight wins including a sweep through the first half of their conference schedule. A team that has yet to be defeated in their home gym.
On this night however it was the visitors who took...
...an early lead going up 14-2 at one point then held down the Viking offense to reach intermission with a commanding 29-14 lead. Ryan Geeting came out aggressive scoring 15 first half points on drives and offensive rebounds.
“Our defense was the best it was all season keeping their high scoring guards and 6’7 center in check,” said Fremont Coach Pete Zerfas.
The Packers came out of the break keeping the pressure on, knowing they were up against a team with explosive offensive power. At one point facing a 3rd quarter deficit of 21 points the Vikings turned on the burners and fought their back but it was not enough and the Pack held them off to pick up their third win in the last four games.
Sam Kaastra had 9 points and 6 rebounds and Dominick Byrne once again hit some clutch free throws in the 4th and scored 8. Sophomore 6’8 center Logan Karnemaat played extremely good defense on their big man blocking 4 shots to go with his 6 points and 5 rebounds.
The Packers (4-2, 7-4) will resume league play Friday when they host Chippewa Hills (3-4, 4-4)
