Parks Dept, ORV Club partner for upcoming event
As part of Michigan’s Free ORV Weekend Aug. 19-20, Newaygo County Parks & Recreation Department and the West Michigan Ridge Runners ORV Club are partnering to offer an ORV Weekend at Diamond Lake County Park, just north of White Cloud.
Both Michigan residents and out-of-state visitors can ride without an ORV license or permit during the Free ORV Weekend Aug. 19-20. This is the second ORV weekend at Diamond Lake Park that allows ORVs to go to and from their camping site but must maintain a 10 mph speed limit like other vehicles while in the park.
The West Michigan Ridge Runners ORV Club (WMRR) will be organizing a ride at 9:30 a.m. Saturday leaving from Diamond Lake County Park and heading north and east to the Hawkins area on Cottonwood and 17 Mile Road in Barton Township and then back again. Drivers must follow all ORV rules and safety regulations and drivers aged 12-16 must have an ORV safety certificate. Drivers 16-18 must have either a safety certificate or a driver’s license.
“The first weekend in July was a great success so we decided that we wanted to offer another ride to a different part of the county. The free ORV weekend was the perfect time,” said James Maike, chair of the WMRR.
“Diamond Lake County Park is perfectly situated to access many routes in northern Newaygo County. We are happy to partner with the West Michigan Ridge Runners who do a great job mapping out the rides,” said Parks Director Nicholas D. Smith.
Anyone interested in camping must have a reservation and they can be made by calling the campground at 231-689-1190 or online at:
