Newaygo County Cross Teams All Leap Bales of Hay
By Alexis Mercer
In what is a rare occurrence, every cross country team within Near North Now’s coverage area was in the same location on Saturday, September 9. Fremont, Grant, Hesperia, Newaygo, Tri-County and White Cloud all joined in the fun yet competitive event at Fremont Middle School.
The high school course was a standard 3.1 miles (5K). But instead of competing in what is an already difficult endeavor, now the runners were additionally vaulting and climbing over bales of hay. The Fremont Hill and Bale Invitational is a unique, memorable experience; one that all of Newaygo County participated in this year.
Teams were split into two divisions: large and small schools. Fremont, Grant, Tri-County and Newaygo joined other West Michigan teams in the large school division. Hesperia and White Cloud competed in the small school division.
Fremont took the large school division title for the boys, with Fruitport 51 points behind them. Muskegon Reeths-Puffer took first for the girls large school division, followed by Fremont.
In the small school boys division, Montague took the title with Muskegon West Michigan Christian took second. For the girls in the small school division, White Cloud won the title and Libertas Christian took home the runner-up trophy.
