Lions Sweep; Heideman, Pekel Toss Gems In Opener
Newaygo 1-6 Fremont 0-5
Jarrod Heideman and James Pekel flocked horns in a classic pitchers duel with Heideman’s Lions coming out on top courtesy of a 2nd inning sacrifice fly off the bat of Noah Graff
Heideman scattered five hits and struck out 6 while Pekel fanned 7 Lions while yielding just 3 hits.
Cooper Heinzeman, Nick Simington, and Hunter Lay each managed one hit to lead Newaygo.
In the ‘cap the Lions manufactured a run that broke a 5-5 tie in the bottom of the 6th then saw Jacob Polasek hold down what had been a potent Packer offense in the top of the 7th and Newaygo came away with the sweep.
Polasek earned the win tossing three innings, surrendering one run, two hits, striking out one, and walking one. Zane Stroven took the loss for Fremont. He threw two innings, surrendering two runs, and two hits.
Conner Swinehart and Hunter Lay drove in two runs apiece to lead the Lion offense and Fremont collected ten hits led by Parker Groenevelt and Zane Stroven.
“The guys kept battling right until the very end. Both these wins were good wins for us,” said Lion Coach Jerry Bomay.
