The hosts brought some the hardware Saturday as Connor Swinehart and Jarrod Heideman picked up victories on the mound courtesy of strong defensive play and an opportunistic offensive output.
Andrew Goodin, Nick Simington, Jarred Heideman, and Cooper Heinzman drove home the runs in the semi-final to give Swinehart the support he needed for the 7-2 win.
The final saw Morley holding a 3-2 advantage before two big innings by Newaygo put the game out of reach. The Lions scored three times in the 6th and came back with 3 more in the 7th to secure an 8-3 victory and move on to regional play next Saturday June 10th at Morley Stanwood where they will face Reed City in a 10 am game.
Simington, Goodin, Swinehart and Noah Graff each collected a pair of hits.
We had a hard time figuring out (Dayne) Edgerly early going in the game,” said Coach Jerry Bomay. “He is a tough pitcher and kept us pretty quiet most of the game, but in the 6th inning our bats came alive and we started driving the ball hard. I am proud of these young men. They never gave up.”
